Robert Leroy Jewell
August 23, 1935 - March 7, 2018

Robert Leroy Jewell passed away peacefully on March 7, 2018 in Wichita, Kansas with his children by his side. Bob was born on August 23, 1935 in Pampa, Texas to Frank Alexander and Violet (Marlin) Jewell.
After graduating from Winters High School in 1954, Bob attended Texas A&M College and joined the Corps of Cadets. Upon graduating in 1958 with his Petroleum Engineering degree, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. On May 31, 1958 he married the love of his life, JoAnn Barrett in Greenville, Texas and from that day forward they embarked on an incredible marriage of travel, love, and adventure that lasted 58 years.
Bob’s career with Halliburton moved him and his family to thirteen different locations, including Australia and Indonesia. Their many moves instilled a love of travel and appreciation for their extended Texas family.
After retiring from Halliburton in 1983, he and JoAnn resettled in Whitesboro to care for the family homestead and began their second career as cattle ranchers. Bob worked and managed the herd with JoAnn by his side as best cowhand (as long as he paid her with Diet Coke and chocolate!).
In addition to cattle ranching, they opened Children’s Tree Learning Center in town, building it to be a leading early childcare center in Grayson County. After 16 years at the helm, Bob and JoAnn turned their full attention to their farm, their growing family, and each other.
Bob and JoAnn were active members of the United Methodist Church and they served in various leadership roles. Bob especially enjoyed the Methodist Men’s groups and singing in the church choir.
Hospitality and community service were an integral part of their lives. They frequently opened their home to family and friends. Whether supporting his church or the educational effort of students in the community, Bob influenced the lives of many with his wise counsel and generosity. Bob loved his family, family genealogy, playing chess, reading, woodworking, and watching Texas A&M football.
He was known for his integrity, godly character, humor and compassionate heart. He lived in life knowing God was watching over him and his family.
Bob is survived by his children, daughter, Janet and husband, Randy Whisenhunt of Hillsboro, Kansas; son, Jeff and wife, Kristy Jewell of Northville, Michigan; grandchildren, Julie and husband, Tony Ford of New York, New York, Jennifer Whisenhunt of New York, New York, William, Robert, and Thomas Jewell of Northville, Michigan; great-grandchildren, James and Joseph Ford of New York, New York.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, beautiful wife, and a sister, Mary Katherine.
Graveside services will be at 11 A.M., Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro with Rev. Adam Spore officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 A.M. until 10 A.M. on Saturday at Meador Funeral Home in Whitesboro. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Music Department, P.O.
