Paul Barrett Wells(1929 - 2018)
Paul Barrett Wells January 21, 1929 - February 17, 2018 San Diego Paul Barrett Wells, husband, father, family man, and dedicated friend, passed away peacefully February 17th in his adopted home town of San Diego with family by his side. He was 89. Paul enjoyed practicing law and besides his wife and family being a lawyer was what he loved. It brought him to San Diego where he and Carol lived for over 50 years and together they created many wonderful friendships. Paul was the definition of fairness, integrity, and professionalism with a keen eye for the intricacies of the law. He was able to establish himself as one of the "go to" attorneys in San Diego. Born in Beaumont, Texas on January 21st, 1929 Paul loved his Texas heritage, and spent his youth in Houston. After graduating high school he attended Texas A&M in 1949 and graduated as a proud Aggie. In 1953 he joined the US Naval Air Corps as a navigator-bombardier, and became a LT jg until 1956. It was during this time he met his wife Carol. In 1956 they moved to Westwood, California, so he could attend UCLA Law School. He was lucky to meet two men, Pat Crowell and Joe Neeper, and together they formed life-long friendships in SD. Upon graduation from law school and as a member of the Order of the Coif, he took a job with Higgs, Fletcher, and Mack. After a few years in San Diego he moved his family to Connecticut practicing law for Texaco. Paul came to San Diego for a January business trip in 1964 leaving a cold New York to find a warm San Diego. He immediately knew he wanted to come back. A friend called him about Alec Cory who was expanding a small law firm. He then made the best professional and life decision he ever made besides marrying Carol. Paul and his young family soon headed back to San Diego. He began practicing with Alec, who became a great friend and mentor, at the firm which later became Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves, & Savitch. Paul loved the firm and it became his second family. He developed valued friendships that lasted well past his retirement. Paul had many hobbies. Golf, skiing, fishing with close friends Larry Irving, Fred Tellam, and Bob Ames. He enjoyed photography so much he built a darkroom in his home. He enjoyed friends, family, and always loved sharing a good glass of wine and a story. He volunteered at KPBS for 40 years, at Lindbergh Field for 25 years, Grossmont Hospital for 20 years.
