Gene R. Barber
July 30, 1926 - February 10, 2018

Gene R. Barber, 91, formerly of Pampa, passed away peacefully Friday, February 10, 2018 in Weatherford.

Celebration of life services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday March 3, 2018, at First United Methodist Church Chapel in Pampa, with John Curry, officiating. A reception will follow in the church parlor. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa.

Gene Richards Barber was born July 30, 1926 in Fort Madison, Iowa, to Lawrence Arthur Barber and Gertrude Richards Barber. Six weeks later the family moved to Pampa where Gene was raised. He worked for his dad’s construction company learning this trade and was a job foreman at age 14. Barber enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps, training to fly planes in World War II. His career in the service was cut short when the war ended September 2, 1945.

In June 1946, Gene married Erma Lee Kennedy of Pampa. They were happily married for 63 years. Gene graduated from Texas A&M with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1951.

During the time that Gene and Erma Lee raised their children, Gene became a registered professional engineer in the states of Texas and Oklahoma and was a registered professional land surveyor in Texas. Barber was employed as an engineer with Brown and Root Inc. of Houston from 1951 to 1957. He was a cost and office engineer of the construction of the original 24-mile long Lake Ponchartrain Bridge, the world’s longest bridge, located near New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1957 Barber became an associate of Roberts, Merriman and Bowden Engineering of Pampa. In 1961 the partnership was dissolved before Merriman & Barber Consulting Civil Engineers, Inc. was formed. He served the community for several years as County Surveyor. One of the many projects was the engineering on the original Celanese Chemical Plant in Pampa. Barber was always focused on the development of the Texas Panhandle in every civic aspect, especially for Pampa.

The American Society of Civil Engineers presented a life member diploma to Gene R. Barber, P.E. for his service in the Texas Plains area. The Texas Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Water Works Association and the Texas Surveyor Association are among the professional societies of which Barber was an active member. Barber was recognized by the State of Texas for actively serving for over 50 years as a Professional Civil Engineer. He was a member and participated in the Pampa Jaycees and Pampa Lions Club. Gene was a member of the First United Methodist Church and active in The Winsome Sunday School class.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, his father and mother and his brother, Jerry Barber.

He is survived by his children, Ronald Barber of Fort Worth and Connie Carlisle of Hudson Oak; his beloved grandchildren, Jeanette Hawkins and husband Gary of Nevada, Missouri and Scott Carlson of Arroyo Seco, New Mexico; two wonderful great grandchildren, Alyx Hawkins of Hudson Oaks, Texas and Spencer Hawkins of Nevada, Missouri; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins.
