Graveside Services with Military Honors for Mr. J.A. Steele, 86 of Tyler are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Whitehouse Cemetery with Rev. Ricky Ricks officiating, under direction of Jackson's Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home. A Memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at Jackson's Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

J.A. Steele passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018 in Tyler. He was born November 20, 1931 in Tyler to the late John Adams Steele and Myrtle Tipps Steele. Mr. Steele graduated from Whitehouse High School, then attended Texas A & M University where he received his Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Education. He then joined the U.S. Air Force which began a 20 year career in the service, where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Upon his Honorable discharge, he followed his educational career by teaching Horticulture at Whitehouse Jr. High and Whitehouse High Schools. He was 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner, also was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, also by his wife, Phillis Steele; two sons, Michael J. Steele and Adam Steele; a daughter, Belinda Cushman; two brothers, Melvin and Tullis Steele; and a sister, Ila Johnson and step-father, Otis Breedlove.

Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Renee Steele of Gladewater; two daughters-in-law, Nilda Steele of Garland and Becky Kilborn of Alba-Golden; step-brother, Alton Breedlove of Ft. Worth; sister, Doris Johnson of Tyler; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Sabir, Christian Cushman, Greg Steele, Amy Ezell, Jodie Cole, Daniel Novotny, Alyssa Steele and Christa Burkhart; and by five great-grandchildren.
