Billy D. Turnbow
February 12, 1929 - December 27, 2017
Billy Deryl Turnbow was born February 12, 1929 to parents Vida Esther Stewart and William Allen Turnbow. He graduated from Perrin High School in 1946 and received a sports scholarship to Texas A&M University, where he was a 4-year letterman in both baseball
and basketball.
After college he joined the Air Force at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. During his Air Force tenure, he married Joy Gayle Talley who also served in the Air Force. Their military careers took them all over the world, as far as England and Japan. He was eventually
given the opportunity to change his branch of service, and joined the Army where he was promoted to Warrant Officer. He was deployed to Saigon in the Vietnam War, specializing in calibrating instruments for helicopters.
After retiring from the military, he moved to Austin, TX and went to work for the Travis State School, primarily working with the Athletics Department there. As a result of this position, he became very involved with Special Olympics and trained their "athletes"
to do their very best and mostly to ENJOY the events they chose to enter. After retiring from the State School, his love for gardening led him to buy a piece of land in Manor, TX so he could plant the garden he'd always wanted. The Manor community embraced
him – and he settled into his quiet life as a country gentleman, enjoying friends and fellowship from Eternal Faith Baptist Church.
Following the death of his wife Joy in 1998, he met a lady from his church named Anne Brazeal. She was also a military wife, and he truly loved her. A courtship began, and they were soon married. His later years were spent gardening, golfing, being active in
his church and the brotherhood of the Colorado Lodge of Masons.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his 2 brothers: Clarence A. Turnbow (wife, Ora Mae), and Richard W. Turnbow (wife, Betty). Also one sister, Tommie Jean (husband, J.M. Hicks). Step-daughter Tara Ann Brazeal also preceded him.
He is survived by his wife; Anne Brazeal Turnbow, Step-son; John Wayne Brazeal, Grandchildren; Corey Lehnick, Leslie Lehnick, Ryan Robisheaux, Heather Scifres, and Great-grandchildren; Aimee Scifres, Alexis Scifres, and Ryan James Robisheaux. In addition, he
is loved and will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
