J. Melvin Hurst

[Date of death was February 10, 2018.]

Melvin was born March 12, 1929 at the crossroads of northeastern Texas in the town of Tenaha, a shipping point on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway and a shipping center for area farmers and lumbermen. Although he was the only child of Reverend H. “Hubbard’ Hurst and Mary “Eunice” Smith Hurst, he would spend his lifetime surrounded by his loving family including his wife of 65 years, two children, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a host of close family friends.

Melvin received his Bachelor’s Degree of Science from Texas A & M University in 1952 where he was a member of the time-honored Corp of Cadets, the oldest student organization on campus, which consistently commissions more officers into the country’s military than any other school in the nation except the three service academies. And although membership in the Corps carries no military obligation, Melvin graduated and began serving our country as a First Lieutenant in the Army Airborne Division of Paratroopers. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in January 1954. It was before his service, on June 10, 1952 that he married the love of his life, Billie Bush, and his military service would provide many opportunities for the couple to travel. Two children, daughter Sherri and son Mike completed the nuclear family in 1956 and 1961 respectively.

Melvin’s occupational history spanned 40 years of employment at Hydrocarbon Construction Company from which retired in March of 1994. During those years, he also completed study at The University of Texas in order to receive a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering in 1960. In addition, after his retirement Melvin worked at the Harris County Appraisal District for several years by serving on its Review Board.

Not only was Melvin lovingly devoted to his family and profession, but many will remember him as an avid golfer as well. His passion for the game led him to the Baywood Country Club where his accolades included being named the Club Champion for a year and recording 2 holes-in-one. Such was his love of the game that he was known for continuing to play despite having a broken arm; a true demonstration of his intensity for the sport. But the golfing pastime provided more than just food for his physical wellness, it also provided many possibilities for Melvin and Billie to expand their circle of close and wonderful friends and participate in many well-remembered activities.

The familiar saying that “family is where life begins and love never ends” certainly describes Melvin’s life. Both his extended and spiritual families have continued to grow and now we celebrate his life as one who we have once loved and can never lose; for as we have loved him so deeply, he has become a part of us.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Billie Hurst; daughter, Sherri Brewton and husband James; son Michael Hurst; grandson Jon Brewton and wife Kerry; granddaughter Amanda Brewton; granddaughter Ashley Branyan and husband Patrick; grandson Christopher Hurst and wife Genesis; two beautiful great-granddaughters Lucy and Olive Brewton; numerous cousins, devoted friends, and the spiritual community of the First Baptist Church of Pasadena.

The funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00pm., Friday, February 16, at First Baptist Church Pasadena, the visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Grand View Memorial Park.
