Bernard E. Ott
June 28, 1925 - December 23, 2017

Bernard Edwin Ott died December 23, 2017, at home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Ott was born in Galveston, Texas on June 28, 1925, to Charles and Tina Ott. He was a proud graduate of Kirwin High School, where he was a star football player. He went on to play football for Texas A&M University, Class of ‘46, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. Before graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in service of World War II. Bernard married the love of his life, Bunnie Ott, on April 20, 1943. They were blessed with eight children as they made their life in Galveston. Bernard was a devoted son, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle.

His family and Catholic faith were the focal points of his life. Bernard loved hunting and fishing with his boys, Aggie football, and his Country. He also had a love of travel that gave his children and grandchildren countless fond memories of seeing the world. Bernard’s wife, children, and grandchildren were his top priorities. He was a volunteer coach of baseball and football, and rarely missed any of his children’s, or grandchildren’s, games or activities. He was dedicated to his family business, Ott Monument Works, which he worked at up until a few months ago. Bernard never met a stranger and had an instant connection to all he met.

He was preceded in death by his “Girl,” Bunnie Louise Ott; parents, Charles and Tina Ott; mother-in-law and father-in-law, James and Myrtle Hawkins; his son-in-law, Harold Thompson; and his grandson, Mason Sebastian Ott.

He is survived by his children: Marshall Ott, and wife, Angie; Richard Ott and wife, Patricia; Linda Ott-Thompson; Terry Ott and wife, Linda; Danny Ott and wife, Monica; Mark Ott and wife, Tami; Denise Ott; Craig Ott and wife, Sheila; grandchildren: David Berns, Christine Munger, Michelle Willette, Jerry Ricci Ott, Christina Delaney, Emily Ott, Meredith Crawford, Andrea Wimberley, Liesl Hays, Marta Ott, Jennifer Ott Roth, Avery Preston, Elise Worthen, Brick Pomeroy IV, Erik Ott, Kyle Ott, numerous nieces, nephews, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Bernard’s most warmhearted and faithful caregivers: Consuelo Martinez, Gabriela Moran, Jennifer Moran, Marian Martinez, Elsa Maltez, and Lillian Martinez; Medical team: Dr. Nancy Hughes and Dr. Lee Grumbles; A-Med Hospice team, especially Stacey Villarreal, Paula Johnson, Kim Hunter and Douglas; and Eucharistic Minister, Peter Villarreal.

Pallbearers will be Bernard’s six sons and and two grandsons, Erik and Kyle Ott. Honorary pallbearers will be David Berns, Jerry Ricci Ott, Brick Pomeroy IV, and Mason Sebastian Ott.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Galveston with a funeral Mass to follow at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

In memory of Bernard donations can be given to A-Med Hospice Care, Texas A&M 12th Man Foundation or Holy Family Catholic Parish.
