June 15, 1932 ~ February 6, 2018 (age 85)
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, February 18, 2018 for Joe Paul Teller, 85, at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan. The Reverend Jim Adams will officiate. Mr. Teller died Tuesday, February 6, at Generations for Senior Living in Bryan. He retired in 1995 from Gulf Coast Waste Disposal Authority after a 35-year career as a professional engineer practicing in the field of Water Supply and Waste Water Treatment. He was proud of the fact that GCWDA was to become completely self-supporting, drawing no tax support from the citizens of Texas. He earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech University, and an M.S. in Sanitary Engineering from Georgia Tech. He was a Commander in the United States Public Health Service Reserve, and a long-time member of the Texas Water Utilities Association. He was involved in creating what was to become the Texas Water Quality Board, now known as the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Prior to his college training, he served in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of Quartermaster First Class. While in the Navy, he was awarded the Republic of Korea Korean War Service Medal, Navy China Service Medal, UN Korean Service Medal, Korean Defense Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Medal, and the Navy Good Conduct Medal.
While at Hilltop Lakes, Mr. Teller served as volunteer fireman, fire chief, ambulance driver, and was the president of the Hilltop Lakes Water Supply Corporation from its inception in 1998. He was a member of the Hilltop Lakes Chapel, and served on several Property Owners Association committees.
He was an accomplished wood worker, and was a dog lover par excellence. He'd tell a near-total stranger that he loved dogs better than people! His dry wit was enjoyed by all.
He joined the senior ukelele band at church, and being the tallest member of the group always portrayed Uncle Sam, as well as other characters in their multi-costumed performances.
He was also an avid golfer, which he enjoyed at Hilltop Lakes while living in their retirement home that he designed.
Pink flamingos were a passion for him, and for over 20 years, he received packages with no return address from all over the world, each containing a unique flamingo item. He claimed to dislike them, yet thoroughly enjoyed opening each package and scowling down at the contents.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Teller and daughter Trisha Barron and husband David Barron, all of Bryan.
