CARL VAN CHUMNEY
AUGUST 25, 1934 ~ FEBRUARY 1, 2018 (AGE 83)
Carl Van Chumney, age 83, passed away on February 1, 2018, in Stephenville, Texas. Carl was born in Hamilton, Texas, to parents Roy Arthur Chumney and Celia Harris Chumney. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Lou Newsom Chumney for 65 years.
Carl is survived by his wife, Lou of Stephenville; daughter, Karleece Nowlin of Fort Worth; daughter, Valiene Bullinger and husband, Dale, of Haskell; and daughter, LaNell Whitaker and husband, Steve, of Hart; granddaughter, Julie and Kyle Holloway of Pilot Point; granddaughter, Kelly Reesor of Corinth; grandson, Ross Bullinger and Tracy Vinson of Abilene; grandson, Whit and Kaimi Whitaker of Putnam Valley, NY; grandson, Will and Hannah Whitaker of Shallowater; granddaughter, Brooke Bullinger of College Station; granddaughter, Mikala Whitaker of Fort Worth; and 3 great-grandchildren. Carl is also survived by sister, Virginia Waldrep of Comanche; sister, Sara Jo Lewis of Levelland; sister, Jeanne Tallent of Moody; brother, Jimmy Chumney of Purmela; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Celia Chumney, brothers, Billie Chumney and Roy Glen Chumney, and a great-granddaughter, Megan Grace Holloway.
He graduated from Hamilton High School and Tarleton State College as well as Texas A&M College where he received a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He also received a Masters Degree from Kansas State University. After a short stent as a surveyor for a lumber yard, he moved back to Stephenville and accepted a position as a Professor at Tarleton State College, where he worked for more than 40 years.
Carl was a great family man and a loving husband and father. He was actively involved with family, former students, and church for the majority of his life. He continued working long after he retired, because he was never one to be idle.
He enjoyed teaching, wood working, snow and water skiing, and being involved with his grandchildren. He will always be remembered as a man that never met a stranger and one that never stopped teaching.
A celebration of life is scheduled for Monday, February 5, 2018, at 2 pm, at First Baptist Church, Stephenville. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 4, from 2 to 4 pm, at Lacy Funeral Home in Stephenville. Donations can be sent to First Baptist Church Stephenville Paradigm Ministries or a charity of your choice.
