Joe Max Word passed away January 29, 2018. Max was the only child of Lena Enright Carson and John Taylor Word. He was born December 28, 1929 in Ozona, Texas where he grew up. Max married Eunice Barge on September 6, 1953. They were married for 65 years.

Dr. Word graduated from Ozona High School as the valedictorian and attended North Texas Agricultural College in Arlington, TX for one year on a football scholarship from 1947 to 1948. He transferred to Texas A&M in 1948 and graduated on May 30, 1952 with a doctoral degree in Veterinary Medicine. He spent a year practicing with a large veterinary group in Memphis, TN, that included zoo animals. He joined the US Army in 1953 and served as a medical officer in the 5th Army Headquarters during the Korean War 1953 to 1955 and then served several more years in the Army Reserves. He returned to Texas in 1955 to practice large animal veterinary medicine in Greenville, TX. He then returned to College Station and taught in the premed department at Texas A&M University. He received an additional Bachelor of Science degree during that year.

In 1959 he entered Southwestern Medical School in Dallas graduating number two in his class in 1960. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the Honor Medical Society, and Phi Chi Fraternity. He did three years post graduate training, one year internship in Dallas, two years residency at University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, OK, and then two more years at St Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, CO.

In 1963 moved to Rifle, CO where he practiced six years of family medicine. In 1969 he returned to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX to complete a residency in Diagnostic Radiology. He was certified by the American College of Radiology and moved to Lubbock in 1972 where he entered private practice. He served on the staff at West Texas Hospital, Highland Hospital, Methodist (Covenant) Hospital, St Mary’s and Texas Tech University Hospital. He was a founding member of the Diagnostic Radiology Associates (DRA). He was the managing Director of DRA for many years. Dr. Word also served on the faculty of South Plains College in Levelland for many years as their Director of Radiology Technologist Program.

Dr. Word was a member of the Lubbock Crosby, Garza County Medical Society in 1987. He received the organizations highest award, Doctor of the Year in 2008. He was also a member of and active in the Texas medical Association. He served on the Board of Censors for several years and was a member of the Radiological Society of North America, American College of Radiology, and Texas Radiology Association.

Dr. Word enjoyed spending time with his children Jon and Tami, and his grandchildren Kyle and Taylor. Always the learner he imparted his love for education and knowledge on his family.

Aside from his family Max enjoyed his favorite Basset Hound, Barney. Dr. Word was a licensed Private Pilot with Instrument Rating, and licensed glider pilot. He also enjoyed salmon fishing in Alaska, trout fishing in Colorado, hunting, hiking, biking, golfing, horseback riding, and roping in rodeos. Snow skiing was his favorite sport. He and Eunice enjoyed traveling and went to many exciting trips including Russia, Germany, Europe, and an African safari.

Max was an active supporter and volunteer with The Boy Scouts of America, Meals on Wheels, Metropolitan Rotary Club, and the Lubbock A&M Club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and served for over 25 years on the Wells Fargo Board of Directors, 12th Man Foundation, Texas A&M Presidents Council, Texas A&M Former Students and the Texas A&M Athletic Ambassadors.

One of Dr. Word’s wishes was to put the words “Paid in Full” on his gravestone. He indeed paid all of his debts “In Full”.

Dr. Word is survived by his wife, Eunice; son, Jon Word; daughter, Tami Word; grandson, Kyle Word; and granddaughter, Taylor Word.
