Norris Harry Miertschin
August 15, 1922 - December 26, 2017

Norris Harry Miertschin died on December 26 in Fredericksburg, TX. He was born in Thorndale, TX on August 15, 1922. He was a life-long Lutheran who loved his Lord and Savior. He married the love of his life, Elsie Pauline Fisher, in 1943.

Norris was a WW II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army’s 86th Mortar Battalion in the liberation of Northern Europe. He survived 315 days of combat. He received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the French Legion of Honor Chevalier, the Belgium Croix de Guerre and many other medals and forms of recognition for bravery above and beyond the call of duty. He was formally discharged in 1955 with the rank of Captain.

After the war he completed his degree in Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M in 1947 and spent a 35 year career with Texaco as Manager of the Southwest Research Region. The early portion of his career was spent in Port Arthur, TX. He moved to Houston in 1962 for the remainder of his career.

Upon retirement in 1982 he and his wife traveled extensively. They moved Katy, TX in 1989. A few years after the death of Pauline in 2012 he moved to Fredericksburg to live with his daughter Diane Garza, and her family.

Norris was a big-hearted man, made friends with people almost instantly, finding something in common with almost everyone he met within a matter in minutes. He was always upbeat, cheerful, and enthusiastic even when things were difficult. He has set a high bar for his descendants in terms of his positive, yet realistic, outlook on life.

Norris epitomized “The Greatest Generation.”

He is survived and remembered by his two children, Gary Miertschin and wife Gretchen and Diane Garza and husband Paul; six grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
