Theodore Charles Batek
October 22, 1934 - January 28, 2018

Theodore “Ted” Charles Batek, 83, passed away peacefully in his sleep at Grace Care of Katy on Sunday, January 28, 2018. He was born to Theodore and Frances (Havelka) Batek in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he graduated as high school valedictorian. In college, Ted was an active member of the Texas A&M Corps before graduating with an accounting degree in 1958 and continuing on to serve as second lieutenant in the Army National Guard. On July 23, 1960 he married the girl of his dreams, Kathryn Alford in Houston, Texas. Settling in Missouri City, Ted and Kathryn raised a family before retiring and moving to Katy, Texas.

Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Kathryn; his 3 daughters, Martha Boswell and son-in-law Ken of Brookshire, Nancy Hyde and son-in-law Bryan of Katy, and Carolyn Beddow and son-in-law Kevin of Rosenberg; his 5 grandchildren, Micah Boswell, Mason Boswell, Kylie Hyde, Kennedy Hyde and Harper Beddow; his 2 brothers, Jeff Batek of Robstown and Johnny Batek of Breckenridge and 1 sister, Mary Ann Hull and brother-in-law J.C. “Carl” of Cuero; as well as many dearly loved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Karen Louise Batek; and beloved German Shepherd pets.

Ted enjoyed a full and varied career with an exciting, entrepreneurial foray into the drilling industry before returning to his chosen field of accounting and eventually retiring from Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department in 2002. He delighted in playing cards (taroky most of all, but bridge and poker were also favorites), watching the Aggies and Houston sports teams, bowling, fishing, traveling, trading stocks and spending time with his family. Known for his playful antics as an uncle, Ted was a doting and attentive father and grandfather—he took equal pride in watching sporting events, dance recitals, musical performances and spelling bees. He was a devoted charter member of Southminster Presbyterian Church, serving as Treasurer for many years. Proud of his Czech heritage, he could waltz along to Bohemian/Moravian band music and developed a particular fondness for good fruit kolaches and strudel. Ted was a thoughtful and patient listener, often sought for his advice and wisdom on both finances and life; he was a gentle, kind soul with a sly sense of humor that stayed with him to the end.

A special thank you is owed to Laurey Nickerson, Jill Bartholf, Kay Franklin and LoVana “Lovey” Tatum for their loving care and support to ensure his comfort during his courageous bout with Parkinson’s disease.

A service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, February 3 at 1pm at Southminster Presbyterian Church (4200 Cartwright Road) in Missouri City, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial scholarship donations may be made under his name (Theodore “Ted” C. Batek ’58 Memorial Scholarship Fund) online at https://www.aggienetwork.com/give/memorialgiving/ or sent directly via mail to The Association of Former Students / 505 George Bush Drive / College Station, TX 77840.
