Edgar Hugh Eckermann
December 1, 1928 - January 20, 2018

Edgar (Ed) Eckermann of Greenville, NC, age 89, died on Saturday, January 20, 2018.

A memorial service will be held on February 3 at 2:00 pm at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Dr. Eckermann was born to Lydia and Edgar Otto Eckermann on December 1, 1928 in Holland, TX where he spent his youth. He earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A & M University in 1952, and in 1962 earned a Masters of Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill. Ed enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career in the US Army Veterinary Corps serving at Ft. Sam Houston Academy of Health and Science, in Vietnam, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Washington, DC, WRAIR Office of the Army Surgeon General, and Defense Logistics Agency. His honors included the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit Defense Meritorious Service, and Army Meritorious Service medals. Following retirement from the army he moved to Greenville and worked in the NC Division of the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service. He was a dedicated member of Greenville Golden Kiwanis, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, and NC Lutheran-Catholic Covenant Committee.

Ed leaves behind many dear friends and extended family. He loved travel, nature and animals of every kind, as well as all things German and Texan. He will be remembered for the twinkle in his eye, his sense of humor, his stubborn streak, and his love for his family.

Ed is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ginger Eckermann, son Hugh Eckermann and wife Hana of Berlin, Germany; daughter Christine Eckermann-Ross and husband Kip of Durham, NC; and brother, Rodney and wife Sue and son Jeffrey, of Lake Belton, TX.
