Dr. Barry “Clay” Cockrill

Dr. Barry “Clay” Cockrill of Pine Grove passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2017. Clay was born on July 9, 1955, in Corpus Christie, Texas, to the late Wallace and Margie (Turner) Cockrill.

He is survived by his wife Sophie Starostina of Pine Grove; sons Adam Crispin (wife Annie) of Bellingham, WA, and Ethan Cockrill of Portland, OR; former wife of 30 years, Carol Galane of Santa Rosa; grandson Nolan Crispin of Bellingham; stepson Michael Yaroshinsky of Los Angeles and stepdaughter Maria Yaroshinsky of San Francisco. Clay was preceded in death by his parents and older brothers, Phillip and Mark.

Clay grew up in Corpus Christie, Texas and graduated from Flour Bluff High School in 1973. In 1979 he received his B.A. in Journalism from Texas A&M University. For 12 years after graduation, Clay was actively involved in his parents’ plumbing business. During those years, he also worked for local newspapers as a writer, photographer and editor, and was a technical writer, professional technical photographer, research assistant and veterinary assistant.

In 1995 Clay graduated from the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He and his first wife, Carol, and their young sons then moved to California, where he began practicing veterinary medicine. They moved to Amador County in 1996.

In 2000, Clay opened his own practice, the Pine Grove Veterinary Clinic, where he served local pets and their owners until his death. While running his own practice, he also provided veterinary care for Tri-County Wildlife Care and the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

Clay loved nature in all its forms. In addition to being a veterinarian, he was a naturalist and conservationist. He was an avid reader, loved music and theatre, enjoyed the company of friends and a stimulating conversation. He will be missed immensely by many people and animals.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at 3:00 pm at the Volcano Armory Hall, at the corner of Consolation and Emigrant streets.

If you would like to make a donation in Dr. Clay’s memory, the family recommends that you consider his favorite nonprofit organizations: The Nature Conservancy, Ocean Conservancy, Foothill Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation, Save The Chimps and the Jane Goodall Institute.
