Flo Hannah(1948 - 2018)
Flo Lain Hannah
1948-2018
Flo Lain Hannah passed away at home on January 10, 2018, after a battle with cancer. She was born in Galveston on April 17, 1948, to James William and Flora Ferguson Lain.
Proud of her Galveston heritage but raised in both Galveston and Houston, she graduated from Memorial High School, received an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas, and earned a Master of Science degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University in 2000 at the age of 52. Flo found great joy in expressing her creativity through painting, pottery and graphic design, but she ultimately found her true passion in the prairie. A great steward for the environment and the Upper Texas Gulf Coast, Flo did meaningful and valuable work in native prairie plant restoration through her role at Houston Audubon, her own impressive nursery of Gulf Coast Prairie plants, and her involvement with several local nature conservancies. Her tireless work for the environment, her positive attitude, her love of the outdoors, and her independent and forthright nature are evident in the lifelong friendships she leaves behind. A wonderful wife, mother, and friend, she will be missed by many. Flo's extensive knowledge of native plants and grasses, her wisdom, and her passion for conservation will live on in nurseries, pocket prairies, and sanctuaries throughout the Upper Texas Gulf Coast.
Preceded in death by her parents, she is survived by her husband of 39 years, Douglas Hannah, her daughters Catherine Hannah Brown and husband Thomas, Sarah Ferguson Hannah, and Emily Hannah Coulter and husband Aaron, and her grandchildren John and Ruby Brown, and Annie, Eleanor, and Patrick Coulter. She is also survived by her sister Dana Lain, stepmother Joyce Lain, step-sisters Catherine and Jamie Black, and numerous loving in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
There will be a private graveside service at Glenwood Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77024 at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 16th, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Flo's name to Houston Audubon (houstonaudubon.org), the Coastal Prairie Partnership (PrairiePartner.org), or the Katy Prairie Conservancy (katyprairie.org) to continue her work in native prairie restoration.
