William O. West, 80, of Port Lavaca passed away January 8, 2018. He was born July 16, 1937 in Duncan, OK to L.T. West and Mary Jo Downard West. He was a life long member of the United Methodist Church. He was a retired coach from Calhoun High School, member of the Texas Coaches Association and served in the US Army. He was an accomplished athlete. Bill played on the State Championship Football Team in Oklahoma for Ada High School in 1954 and was a member of the State Championship Track Team for Ada in 1955 having won 1st place in high hurdles and the mile relay. He went on to play as a running back for the OSU Football team and scored the first touchdown for the OSU Cowboys. Eventually, he graduated from Texas A&M in 1967 and became a County Extension Agent. Having always loved sports, he began coaching in 1972 and coached many generations of athletes including his own daughters and grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as PoPo. He never had a losing season in football and took many of his athletes to state in cross-country and track. The Texas Coaches Association awarded Coach West with the 500 point plaque for his athletes' accomplishments. His fellow teachers voted him Teacher of the Year. He loved his dogs, the ranch, roses, the Dallas Cowboys, St. Louis Cardinals, San Antonio Spurs and above all else Texas A&M "gig-em Aggies".
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joyce McClanahan West; daughters, Windy Stanton (Robert), Dawna Meeks (Bobby), Shannon Myint (Phillip), and Raina Cowgill (Kevin); brothers, L.T. and Barry West and grandchildren, William Stanton, Julianne Stanton, Dustin Snell (Kimberley), Morgan Meeks, Sarah Myint and Matthew Myint.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Memorial Visitation will be held Thursday, January 11, 2018 from 5-7 p.m. in Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be Friday, January 12, 2018 at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home.
Thanks to Memorial Medical Center, Dr. Bunnell and all the nursing staff on the 2nd floor. All the people who came to visit in the hospital, sent cards and facebook messages to brighten his day. He looked forward to the mail every day because of that. And special thanks to Patty Mickle who helped Bill when he was first diagnosed with cancer.
