Obituary for Mr. C.N. (Bud) Powell
Mr. C.N. (Bud) Powell, 84, of Navasota passed away at his home Saturday, January 6. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 11 at 3:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Navasota with the Rev. Barrett Ingram officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
Bud was born in Wichita Falls on June 19, 1933, the son of Cad & Ethel (Ellis) Powell. After graduating high school, Bud attended Texas A&M University and received a Bachelors of Science in Engineering in 1955. That same year he married Amy Purcell on June 3, and together they raised 2 children.
As a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bud assisted with various projects including the N.A.S.A. project construction and the Somerville Lake reservoir. He partnered with Gerald Purcell to establish J Youens & Co. Lumber Yard along with working as an engineer in the T.D.C.J. facilities division. As a general contractor he served the community and its residents in many capacities.
Bud was raised as a Master Mason in Sul Ross Lodge #1300 and was a Past Master of Navasota Lodge #299. During his 60+ years of Masonry he was awarded the Golden Trowel and Perfect Ashlar awards. He was also very active in the Navasota Evening Lions Club where he served as President.
The First Presbyterian Church of Navasota was always very special to Bud. He served in many capacities including Deacon, Elder, long-time adult Sunday school teacher, and temporary choir member when they needed help.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife Amy.
Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Amy Gross; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas & Kelly Powell; sister, Carmen Schultz; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the First Presbyterian Church, 302 Nolan St, Navasota, TX 77868.
