Lawrence Perry Young, Sr.
(February 12, 1932 - December 20, 2017)

L. Perry Young February 12, 1932 – December 20, 2017

Lawrence Perry Young, beloved father, grandfather, and friend slipped peacefully from this world on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at his home. L.P. or Perry as he was known to most, lived 85 wonderful years, most of those years in Wharton with family and friends.

Perry was born in Houston, Texas at Heights Hospital on February 12, 1932, and was the only child of the late Lawrence Parker Young and Iola Mae Faulkner. He spent his childhood in the Heights of Houston and graduated from John H. Reagan High School in 1950.

After high school, he attended Texas A&M College where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and majored in geology. He was a proud Aggie and wore his Class of ’54 ring with so much pride.

After college, he worked for a number of years at Tenneco Gas in Houston as a draftsman where he met the love of his life, Dell Weaver. They married in Houston on July 2, 1960 at Grace United Methodist Church in the Heights. With the encouragement and support of Dell, he enrolled at South Texas College of Law and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1963.

Perry and Dell soon decided Houston was not where they wanted to raise their family which by now had grown to include a daughter, Rachel and son Christopher, so back to Dell’s hometown of Wharton they moved in 1965. Perry began his almost fifty years of private law practice in the office with Thomas Abell. From 1977 to 1985, Perry and Rob C. Ramsey practiced law as Young and Ramsey. The Honorable Susan G. Lowery joined the practice in 1984. Perry remained in the office on the square until his retirement in 2013. Besides practicing law, he was one of the co-founders and owners of Mid-Coast Title Company in Wharton. He was also an adjunct faculty member at Wharton County Junior College and taught Business Law.

Perry was a devoted father to his children. He loved them dearly and always made time to attend every activity his children participated in from piano and dance recitals for Rachel to football, baseball, and basketball games for Chris. He also gave of his time to numerous community organizations and the Wharton County Bar Association. His love of young people led him to devote much of his time as a coach and manager with Wharton Little League and Babe Ruth. He also served as the State Director for Babe Ruth baseball for many years.

To say Perry was a proud Aggie is an understatement. He loved Aggie football and spent years taking his family on Saturdays to College Station to tailgate and attend the home football games. Perry cherished his grandchildren. They were a special part of his life and brought him much joy. He was their biggest supporter, always willing to listen and provide encouragement and guidance. He cherished his time with them. Perry loved life; he loved people; and never met a stranger. He had a zest for life, which was evident in his relationships with those who knew him best. He was a giving person, unselfish, and always willing to help others. Perry considered his family his greatest accomplishment. He dearly loved his children and grandchildren and was equally loved by them. He was a man of deep faith and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Perry was preceded in death by his wife Dell Weaver Young and son, Lawrence “Larry” Perry Young, Jr. He is survived by his children, daughter, Rachel and husband, Billy Bahnsen of Fulshear, Texas and son, Christopher Young of Las Vegas, Neveda, and his grandchildren Cole Young of Pearland, Texas, Paige Bahnsen of Houston, Texas, and Pryce Bahnsen of Fulshear, Texas.

A memorial service to celebrate Perry’s life will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer Street, in Wharton, Texas with Rev. Kelly Krone officiating. For those that desire, the family has suggested memorials may be made in memoriam to L. Perry Young to First United Methodist Church of Wharton, the Bright Focus Foundation, or an organization or charity of your choice.
