He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Smith, and brother, Greg Smith, his four children Tyler Smith, Lauren Smith, Ryan Lynch and Shannon McCain, and five beautiful grandchildren: Andrew and Ardyn Lynch, Elly and Ashe McCain, and Haylie Smith. Ron graduated from Round Rock High School in 1974 and then attended Texas A&M University where he earned a degree in Earth Science in 1979. He later completed a Master of Education degree from Lamar University. Ron taught middle school Science for many years and prior to that had a long career as a Human Resource Manager and recruiter for several high tech companies.

Ron was a remarkable man with a great sense of humor and a positive attitude that was contagious. He had a passion for inspiring and encouraging youth which manifested in his decision to leave high tech and build a youth travel adventure camp called Fort Smith Mountain Men in 2002. As owner and director of Fort Smith Mountain Men, Ron led youth travel camping expeditions all over the western half of the U.S. and Canada reaching Alaska twice. These travel camping adventures changed the lives of both campers and staff.

Ron was a natural leader and mentor. He dedicated the final 15 years of his life to leading both youth and adults through travel camping, teaching middle school science, mentorship, hosting a youth non-profit, and leading family ministry at Austin Baptist Church. Ron authored an inspirational memoir about his youth camp called, Tales of Modern Day Mountain Men, and he co-authored, Simple Man Simple Prayer with Don Rude. Ron was a man of God and fully embraced Christ’s teachings. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, and most of all spending time with family and friends. Ron Smith will continue to be an inspiration to the many people whose lives he impacted with his faithful, loving, and giving heart.
