John C. Quinn Jr.
April 12, 1946 ~ December 18, 2017 (age 71)

John Cardinal Quinn died of pancreatic cancer after almost four years of survival and a love of life and family. John was born on April 12, 1946 at Fort Totten in Queens, New York and was baptized at St Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC. He lived in Ocean Township NJ from 1974 to 2015 before moving to Fair Haven. John served as an enlisted soldier in the US Army from 1967 to 1969. He graduated from Northrop Institute of Technology in 1972 and from Texas A&M University with a master’s degree in engineering.
John had a 36-year career for the US Department of Defense, as an engineer in development and procurement of equipment for military intelligence and communications. He considered his greatest accomplishment raising and educating his four children and his greatest joy in life was seeing his four children and 11 grandchildren grow and learn and become successful. He enjoyed fixing things; old boats, antique cars, old houses, and broken toys. John was proud when he heard the children say, “Grandpa can fix anything.” In the spring of 2000, John completed a 3,500-mile bicycle ride from Los Angeles to Boston. John also enjoyed racing and cruising sailboats. He sailed the coast of Southern California, the East Coast from Maine to Virginia, the Caribbean Sea, and the Ionia Islands of Greece and the Dalmatian Islands of Croatia. He raced in several one-design classes, and won the WoodPussy Class National Championship at Crystal Lake Yacht Club, Michigan in 2007. John served on the Board of Governors of Shrewsbury Sailing & Yacht Club for many years and as Commodore in 2014.
John is survived by his wife Vivian, his children: Chris Quinn and his wife Maria Lourdes Quinn, Erin Blum and her husband Liran Blum, Rose Quinn and her husband Brian Halvorsen, and Jack Quinn, and grandchildren: Joseph, Hailey, Maria Esperanza, Miles, Lia, Ella, Madeleine, Maria Alegria, Hugo, Maria Paz, and Maria Caridad. He was a communicant at The Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Nativity Basic Needs Committee or Meridian Hospice at Home.
Visitation will be held today Tuesday, December 19 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank, NJ 07701. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 20 at Church of the Nativity, 180 Ridge Rd, Fair Haven, NJ 07704. Interment will be private.
