Bob was born at home, in the Pottsville Community of Hamilton County, Texas on January 22, 1934. He was the last child born to Otto Heinrich Karl Goerdel and Hildegarde Maria Marwitz.

Bob was the youngest of five children and grew up speaking German at home and working hard on the family farm. Sundays were times of worship and fellowship at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pottsville. He attended the Pottsville school until his graduation as valedictorian in 1952. After graduation, Bob attend Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas for two years. He then transferred to Texas A&M University at College Station, Texas graduating with a degree in Agronomy in 1956. While at A&M, Bob was a member of the Alpha Zeta Agriculture Honor Society and a member of the Lutheran Student Association.

Upon graduation, Bob began his thirty-seven-year career as a soil scientist with the United States Department of Agriculture. He received his Master’s degree from East Texas State University. His first duty station was Aspermont, Texas with the Soil Conservation Service. He worked there for thirteen years and was transferred to Henrietta, Texas. While attending church in nearby Wichita Falls, Texas, Bob met his future wife. He married Shirley Aaron on July 30, 1971. They raised two sons, Samuel and Thomas. Shirley and Bob were married for 46 years before the Lord called him home on Monday, December 11, 2017.

Mr. Goerdel was actively involved n all the thirteen counties he worked in by writing soils articles for the local newspapers. In 2012, he received recognition for helping achieve the mapping of one million acres of soil for the National Cooperative Soil Survey Program and another certificate for helping complete the initial soil survey of Texas. While working for the soil Conservation Society he was chose to participate in several out of state work details. He worked in Converse County Wyoming and Marshall County South Dakota. During his long tenure, he was the author of five soil surveys and the co-author of eight others. The Soil Survey of Llano County was one of the books and can be viewed at the Llano County Library and the Natural Resources Conservation Service office in Llano.

Bob loved the Lions Club and what it stands for. He was a charter member of both the Aspermont and Henrietta, Texas Lions Clubs and has been a member of the Llano Lions Club since 1994. All his life he was active in service to others. He was a volunteer fireman in Aspermont, Texas, delivered meals for the Meals on Wheels Programs, and was on the Mission Meals Team of the Lutie Watkins Memorial United Methodist Church of Llano, Texas, service on Emmaus Teams and made crosses for many of the Emmaus Walks and for the church to give to new members.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and their wives, a niece and nephew and a great nephew.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Llano, Texas, two sons, Samuel of Carrollton, Texas and Thomas and his wife Holly of Lawrence, Kansas and their two children, Rhone and Coen. Those grandchildren were the loves of his life. Also by his brother, Reverend Calvin Goerdel and his wife Donna of Clifton, Texas and his sister, Lorine Peters of Cedar Hill, Texas and sister-in-law, Pamela Weaver and her husband Gary of Arlington, Texas and my nieces and nephews.

Visitation and services were held at the Lutie Watkins Memorial United Methodist Church in Llano, Texas and burial in the Llano Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Llano Library, the Llano Lions Club, or the Lutie Watkins Memorial United Methodist Church for their mission activities.
