George A. Burt ’44
George Arnold Burt, Jr, was born on October 28, 1924, in Crandall, Texas, to George Arnold Burt, Sr. and Jessie Mae Shipley Burt. He always said he had a happy, carefree childhood, surrounded by multi-generations of loving family. He loved to walk the fields
of his paternal grandfather’s farm and hunt with his uncle. He said those were some of his fondest memories.
Being raised by a former teacher, he excelled in school - even skipping a grade. George graduated Crandall High School at 15 years of age. As a 15 year old young man, his father drove him to Texas A&M University where he paid his first semester books and tuition
of $23 and his first month room and board $25 & then left him there to make his way. He was a member of the Corps of Cadets - Class of 1944. Needless to say, he loved being an Aggie. It was as fresh in his memory at the end as it was during the present.
He was drafted out of A&M in his last year of college where he entered the newly created ASTP - an elite officer training - where he made lifelong and dear friends. Within 6 months that was disbanded and he was sent to Europe where he was assigned to General
George Patton's Third Army in Germany. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge & shared many stories of that time. He finished his service there in Nuremberg - where he even had the chance to see one of the Nuremberg trials. He also had occasion to see General
Patton with his pearl handled pistols. He was full of every detail of this season of his life.
Upon return, he married Rowena Fallin in 1945, and George went to work for Moore Business Forms in Denton. They had three children while living there - Michael, Cyndi and Claudia. He was transferred to Alabama with that company where Matt was born. But longing
for home they moved back to Texas soon.
In 1960 the family was moved to Richardson, Texas, and soon George found his favorite place to work -Frito Lay! He was a manager there in route accounting. He always loved that company and followed their successes personally. He retired in 1988. But he never
really retired - he went on to work almost 23 years for H & R Block!
In 1969 -George and Rowena divorced sadly, and he moved to the Chicago area with Frito Lay for a few years.
In 1984, George married Joy Fagala, and they moved into a home in Garland and blended their grown family. They attended Casa View Baptist Church and really loved their church family. When George retired, they bought an RV and began traveling with the Holiday
Ramblers. What fun they had and again-they made some dear and treasured friends.
Joy-sadly-passed away suddenly in 2003 and then we lost Cyndi in 2004. It was one of the toughest times in his life, but he kept working and stayed busy. And….he found Sam. Dad looked long and hard to find a dog to "rescue", and knew in an instant that Sam
was the one. Funny, I have never been sure -who rescued who?
George was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He was a great husband -father-grandfather and great-grandfather. Family was so important to him. He was able to enjoy the smallest ones in such a special way. It was a joy for me to see.
