Duane Arthur Boenig
(December 4, 1929 - December 2, 2017)

Duane Arthur Boenig, 87, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 2, 2017, at his home in Richmond. He was born December 4, 1929, in San Antonio to Arthur and Laura Boenig. Duane grew up close to Converse where his parents, grandparents Adolph and Lena, and sister Evangeline all lived and worked on the family farm. Along with other members of the local communities of Schertz and Cibolo, Duane attended the Bexar County one-room school in Converse from first through ninth grade. In 1940, with the gift of a $5.00 Duroc gilt (female pig) purchased by mail order through Sears Roebuck and a second Duroc gilt, won by Duane through the Sears Roebuck Foundation, he began raising and showing swine in 4-H under the guidance of his father and County Agent Henry Fitzhugh.

Over the next eight years, Duane would take the litters of his herd Sire "Chief" and Dam "Daisy June" to unbelievable success. At the 1944 Houston Fat Stock Show and Live Stock Exposition, Duane showed the Grand Champion Pen of Three Barrows, Reserve Grand Champion Litter and Reserve Grand Champion Barrow.

At the 1945 Houston Fat Stock Show, he showed the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Litters, Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Barrows, the Grand Champion Pen of Three Barrows and Champion Duroc Female. And at the 1946 Houston Fat Stock Show, he showed the Grand Champion Barrow, Grand Champion Pen of Three Barrows and Champion Duroc Female.

He completed 1946 with the Grand Champion Pen of Three Barrows at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth earning a trip to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago where he was awarded Outstanding 4-H Accomplishment - National Meat Animal Livestock Projects - presented by Thomas E. Wilson of Wilson Meat Packing, Omaha, Nebraska. Duane continued his winning ways through 1948, accumulating over 70 State of Texas wins, of which nineteen were Champion or Grand Champion and 32 were first place ribbons. Upon graduation from Brackenridge High School in 1948, the $22,800.00 in scholarships Duane earned afforded him the opportunity to attend Arlington State College and then transfer to and graduate from Texas A & M, Class of '52.

Following college graduation, Duane served his country in the U.S. Army at Fort Hood as a Personnel Management Specialist from 1953 to 1955, receiving an Honorable Discharge. For the next nine years, 1956 to 1965, Duane began his professional career first as an Assistant County Agricultural Agent in Harris County and then as a County Agent in Kendall County, Texas.

In the summer of 1957, while attending classes for the Extension Service at Colorado State in Fort Collins, Duane met Carol from St. Paul, Minnesota. They dated, and at the end of the week, prayed and placed their relationship in God's hands. Over the next year, Duane would travel to St. Paul to meet Carol's family and the couple continued to talk and write long distance. They were married in June of 1958 and returned to Texas settling first in Houston where they celebrated the birth of their daughter Laurey, then to Boerne and the birth of their son Paul, and finally to Rosenberg-Richmond in 1965.

Having settled in Rosenberg, Duane began his second professional career. Hired by Bob Davis in 1966 at Fort Bend Federal Savings and Loan, Duane specialized in residential and commercial real estate appraisal and served on the loan committee for the next 33 years until his retirement in 1999 from now Amegy Bank. Never one to stop working, Duane opened his own business as an independent real estate appraiser and real estate broker, his third and final career. At the offices of Bob Van Slyke and Berkshire Hathaway, Duane continued serving Fort Bend County until his final retirement in 2016.

Duane was also very active in Fort Bend community service. In 1966, he joined the Rosenberg Lions Club, serving as President from 1982 to 1983. In 2016, Duane was honored as he celebrated 50 continuous years of service. He joined the Fort Bend County Fair Association, attained Life Membership and in 1971 served as the Fair Association President. He would continue to serve the Fair Association over the next 40 years in various roles as an Association Board Member and on the Association Scholarship Committee. He was active with American Legion Post 271 of Rosenberg, and as a member of Joy Lutheran Church, Duane was always busy, serving on the Church Council, Call Committee or as a Greeter or Usher.

Along the way, Duane always had time for coffee, couldn’t pass up a meal at Harry and Sidney Mellon's office and never missed an opportunity to go hunting with a friend. Some of his greatest memories were trips to Africa, the first with James Sebesta and James’s daughter, Kelsey. A gold medal Kudu and a silver medal Impala came home to join the South Texas white tail on the wall. His second trip to the west coast of Africa was just as successful, although Carol did draw the line at a shoulder-mounted warthog joining the growing menagerie. Every September, a trip to Uvalde for white wing dove hunting with George Pharis, Jr., was not to be missed, and the stories Duane brought back and shared were worth the price of admission.

With all his individual accomplishments, Duane would say his family was his greatest success. His fifty-nine year marriage to Carol was the bright spot of his life. They were a team, working together, praying together, and supporting one another in their individual pursuits and the success of their children, Laurey and Paul. Duane never failed to count each and every day as a blessing, and was forever thanking God for the gifts he had received.

Duane is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Laura Boenig and his sister Evangeline Stephens. Survivors include his loving wife Carol, his daughter Laurey Boenig of Richmond, son Paul Boenig and life partner Bryan Rutledge of College Park, GA, and treasured extended family in Converse, New Braunfels, San Antonio and Germany.

A visitation will be held at Joy Lutheran Church, 717 FM 359, Richmond, TX on Saturday, December 9th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a Worship Celebration at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Forest Park Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX at 1:30 p.m.
