Thurmond Armour Munson Jr.

Thurmond Armour Munson, Jr. upgraded to his heavenly home on November 28, 2017. He left a lasting legacy of love and exemplary dedication to the ones he loved, and will be greatly missed.

Thurmond was born in Bryan Texas on November 1, 1930, to Thurmond Armour Munson and Mary Emma “Minnie” Hardwick Munson. He spent his first years in College Station Texas where his father was a professor of Civil Engineering. He also lived in Lufkin, Dallas, Tyler, and San Antonio while his father was assigned to various duties with the Army during the Great Depression and World War II, before returning to College Station. He began High School at A&M Consolidated, then graduated from Freeport High School in 1948 after his family moved to the area when his father took a position with Dow Chemical.

Thurmond was a proud member of the Class of 1952 of Texas A&M, graduating with a BS in Chemical Engineering. He began working for Dow Chemical in Freeport prior to his entry into the US Army. During that interim period Thurmond met the love of his life, Doris Marie Davidson, and they were married on June 10, 1954 at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, where Thurmond was stationed in the US Army. After his honorable discharge as a First Lieutenant in 1956, Thurmond and Doris returned to Lake Jackson, TX and he resumed his duties at Dow Chemical, where he proudly worked for the rest of his professional career.

Anyone around Thurmond for a bit of time soon learned that he had a great love of singing. He frequently burst into song when inspired by a name, event, or saying. He was a member of the Singing Cadets while at A&M. In Lake Jackson he served in a variety of service positions, including as a Boy Scout Cub Master, Little League umpire, on the United Way Board. He was a strong supporter of the First United Methodist Church of Lake Jackson, serving as a Sunday School teacher, with the Methodist Men, and on various committees. Thurmond also served on the board of the Gulf Coast Mental Health Center.

Thurmond loved to travel with his family on long vacations with everyone stuffed into a station wagon. He continued his love of travel with Doris to locations all over the globe. He enjoyed intellectual study of all things, on his own and with others such as his Bible study groupsand his “Old Folks Discussion Group.”Thurmond also provided an exemplary commitment to loving devotion as he served as a dedicated caregiver to his wife Doris during her long affliction by Alzheimer’s.
