JUDD MCNETT
December 14, 1949 - December 2, 2017

Michael Judd McNett, age 67, passed away on December 2, 2017 surrounded by family at his home in Nacogdoches, TX.

Judd was born on December 14, 1949, in Andrews, TX to Dr. Roy Christian and Anna Sue McNett. In the coveted spot as the youngest of four, Judd experienced a colorful youth as a child of a US Navy Captain, living in exotic locals such as California, Maryland, Virginia, and Rota, Spain. He graduated Flour Bluff High School class of ’67 in Corpus Christi and earned his dress whites as a Navy medic in 1970, graduating top of his class. During these years he formed a life-long friendship with David Butcher and their shared passion for motorcycles. Back on land Judd worked as a cowboy in Shamrock, TX and Vermejo Park Ranch in New Mexico. He earned degrees in Psychology from Stephen F. Austin and Biomedical Science from Texas A&M, where he met the love of his life, Joan. Armed with the impeccable relationship advice of classmate Steve Yarbrough, he embarked on a two-year courtship involving guitar playing, mushroom soup/peanut butter and jelly sandwich making, and table dancing at the Dixie Chicken. They married in 1981. Their daughter Yesenia was born soon after, delivered by dear friend, Richard Peavey MD. The McNetts pursued Judd’s ranching career through Elgin, Georgetown, and Driftwood, eventually settling in Canyon Lake, where son Richard was born, delivered by Peavey, now promoted to godfather. While Joan finished nursing school, Judd raised their two children, served as a volunteer EMT and began what would eventually lead to a 20 year career with the US Army Corps of Engineers as a park ranger. Judd’s innate connection to the outdoors made this a perfect fit. As the kids grew, his free time was filled with scouting, baseball and soccer games, choir and theatre shows, and camping and swimming at the lake. After a final move to Nacogdoches to work at the Sam Rayburn Reservoir he retired in 2014. Judd and Joan found fellowship at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and volunteered with Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Together they continued enjoying the outdoors and riding his Harley for as long as his body would allow. Judd passed due to complications of cancer.

Judd is survived by his beloved Joan Catalina McNett, his children Yesenia McNett (Carrie Batusic) and Richard McNett, grandson Steven Clark, mother Sue McNett, and siblings Christine Hoskins (Don Hoskins), Marilyn Hill, and Roy McNett Jr, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Roy McNett. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, melodic whistling, connection with nature, and taste for Shiner beers.

Visitation will be Thursday December 7th from 5-7pm with a 7pm rosary at Laird Funeral Home, and funeral mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday December 8th at 10am, reception following. Flowers are welcome, and/or memorial donations to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Nacogdoches Animal Shelter or Patriot Guard Riders.
