James Melvin (Jim) Hodges of Chandler, Arizona passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 of age related causes. He was 86 years old. Jim was born on November 12, 1931 in Crescent City, California to Nellie Helen (Stewart) Hodges and Daniel Ivan Hodges. He was a US Army veteran, who graduated from Oregon State University (BS) and Texas A&M University (MS). Following college, Jim worked nearly 40 years with the Eugene School District 4J in Oregon, where his passion for education was evident. The majority of his career was spent as a teacher and guidance counselor at North Eugene and South Eugene high schools, and he also taught Adult Education classes at Lane Community College. After he retired, Jim spent countless hours traveling to visit with family and friends, and volunteering at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene and at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, his beloved former wife Nancy (Shinkle) Hodges, and his nephew Robert Fetter. He is survived by his daughter Pamela Hodges Kulinna of Chandler, Arizona, her former husband F. Eric Kulinna, and their son F. Parker Kulinna, as well as his sister Maxine (Hodges) Fetter of Portland, Oregon, her husband Bill Fetter and their family, which includes niece Diane (Fetter) Priewe of Philomath, Oregon, her husband Rob Priewe, and their children Alison Priewe, Alison's fiancé Steven Hook, Ross Priewe, and Reid Priewe, and niece Mika (Suzuki) Fetter of Portland, Oregon and her children Kai and Nanami Fetter.
Arrangements are being handled by Valley of the Sun Mortuary & Cemetery in Chandler, Arizona and the family will have private memorial and honor Jim's request to scatter his ashes at Spencer's Butte in Eugene at a later date.
