John Donvie Cain

Nashville - John Donvie Cain, a devoted husband, father and grandfather and an accomplished architect, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Beaumont, Texas on August 7, 1934 as the only child of John and Lucille Cain, John graduated from Beaumont High where he was an All-District track standout in shot put and discus. John obtained his degree in Architecture from Texas A&M University where he was in the Fighting Texas Aggie Class of 1956, a member of the track team, and Company Commander of Squadron 24 of the Corps of Cadets.

Following graduation, John was one of the first Air Force officers assigned to Grand Forks Air Force Base. While in ND, he married Evonne Ellegard on Valentine's Day, 1960. In 1962, John moved his family to Clarksville, Tennessee, where he worked with the Corps of Engineers at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. The family moved to Nashville in 1963 and he became a registered architect in 1964. In 1968 he was a founding member of the architectural firm Schlott, Norman & Cain. Over the next decade, the firm was noted for the designs of several award-winning buildings, housing developments and college and state park facilities in and around Tennessee. John continued practicing architecture on his own for the next 35 years in Nashville and Franklin, where he served for 22 years on the Williamson Co. Planning Commission and as chairman of the Building and Fire Codes Board.

John is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Evonne Cain; their three children John Cain (Nanci) of Houston, TX, David Cain (Andrea) of Nashville, and Christie Swanbeck (Ian) of The Woodlands, TX; and grandchildren Catharina Cain, Emily Williams (Grant), Anna Cain, Elle Swanbeck, Jack Cain, Alexandra Swanbeck, Katie Cain, Olivia Swanbeck, and Carter Cain.

The family wishes to thank doctors Thomas McRae and Joseph Coselli (Houston), who saved John's life in 2012, and doctors Mark Lickey, Douglas Linfert & Jackson Wray. The family also has deep gratitude for the staff of Alive Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.

Friends are invited to visit with the family at St. George's Episcopal Church on November 22 from 10:00 - 11:00am in Hampton Hall with a service to be held immediately following, officiated by The Rev. Samuel Adams.
