Richard Standifer Griffith passed away on Wednesday, the 1st of November 2017, in Lafayette, Louisiana. He was born on the 20th of January 1954, in Houston.

Richard grew up in Houston but over the course of his life he lived and had homes in Corvallis, MT, Jackson Hole, WY, the Florida Keys, and West Columbia, TX. Richard attended St. John's School, Millbrook School in Millbrook, NY and Le Rosey in Rolle, Switzerland. He graduated from Lamar High School in Houston. He attended two years at Texas A&M. Richard loved the outdoors and had many passions that led him on adventures in the US and around the world. He grew up downhill skiing with his family in Aspen, CO, and he also loved to cross country ski. He was at one time skilled in metal working and welding. In his 20s he was an avid rock climber and once summited El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, spending one night on the cliff face in order to reach the summit. Richard loved to fly fish in Montana and Wyoming, and deep sea fish in Florida. Later in life Richard developed a passion for scuba diving and in the last 10 years of his life made numerous trips to Indonesia and the Philippines with friends. He had returned from Indonesia just weeks before he passed away.

Richard married Liane Kirsch from Montana on the 6th of May 1989, and adopted Laine's daughter, Alix, from an earlier marriage. Richard is predeceased by his parents, James P.S. Griffith and Fay Wilson Griffith. He is survived by his siblings, Mary Griffith Wallace and her husband Roger, James P.S. Griffith, Jr. and his wife Margaret, Wilson Morse Griffith and his wife Patricia, his daughter, Alix Griffith Schultz, his grandchildren, Maddox, Ridley, Scarlett and Rook Schultz, and seven nieces and nephews.

Friends are cordially invited to gather and share remembrances of Richard from four o'clock in the afternoon until six o' clock in the evening on Thursday, the 16th of November, in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

For those desiring, in lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed toward The Nature Conservancy, Attn: Treasury, 4245 N. Fairfax Dr., Ste. 100, Arlington, VA 22203 for their work on oceans in Indonesia and specify marine conservation (www.nature.org).
