Larry Neil Hammes
1946 - 2017

AUGUSTA, MAINE
Larry N. Hammes, age 71, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2017 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta following a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Hot Springs, AR on Sep. 8, 1946, the eldest son of Norman W. and Shirley L. (King) Hammes.
A “military brat,” Larry was a graduate of Ft. Leavenworth High School and received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Texas A&M University.
As a proud military veteran, Larry served stateside and in South Korea, reaching the rank of US Army captain. Following his time in the Army, he was employed by the Bureau of Veterans Affairs for 28 years, working in California and New Mexico before finally settling down in Maine, where he retired from Togus in 2000. Restless in retirement, Larry became a substitute teacher in the Augusta school system before joining the team at L.L. Bean, where he has worked for the last 14 years.
Larry - known as “Chief” among his family - was pre-deceased by his father, Norman.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Sandra J. (Switton) Hammes; his two daughters, Alexa A. (Hammes) Terry and her husband Bill, and Lindsay E. Hammes. He is also survived by his mother, Shirley Hammes of Nixa, MO; two sisters, Anne Lynn Kelley and her husband Reg of West Branson, MO and Julie Hammes of Wayzata, MN; his brother, Patrick N. Hammes and his wife Dawna of Brownsville, TX as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Later in life, Larry was a familiar face around the central Maine community theatre circuit, performing in hundreds of shows over the years. He had innumerable hobbies and interests, an interminable curiosity for life, and could be counted on to dote on his shelter cats. Known for his quick smile, warm heart, bad jokes, and bear-hugs, Larry is, and will be, so missed.
At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Thursday Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Civic Center Drive in Augusta. Following the internment, a celebration of life service will be held at The Senator Inn & Spa in Augusta, from 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. for family and friends.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Larry’s memory to either:
Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 10 Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, ME 04330 or National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Greater New England Chapter, 101A First Ave. Suite 6, Waltham, MA 02451.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME.
