Bert Lewis Huebner
(November 9, 1928 - November 5, 2017)

Bert Lewis Huebner, 88, passed away November 5, 2017. He was born November 9, 1928 in Lane City, Texas to George Lee and Leta Belle Taylor Huebner who bore five sons.

Bert graduated Wharton High School, Class of 1946, and attended Texas A & M College, Class of 1950.He married Dorothy Ann (Dot) Baer Huebner in 1953 in Bay City, Texas. After leaving Texas A & M, he entered the United States Air Force Officer Pilot Training Corps wherein he received both his commission and his wings at Foster Field in Victoria, Texas. Bert served during the Korean conflict as a jet pilot with an all weather interceptor squadron located in Maine. His primary duties were being dispatched well out over the North Atlantic to intercept unidentified and potentially hostile aircraft inbound toward the United States.

Following his discharge, Bert and Dot returned to Bay City at which time he became the co-manager of Baer Cattle Company, a position he served for over 50 years. Along with the assistance of Dot, he helped perpetuate the Baer family legacy and helped guide and sustain the family ranching business for a substantial portion of its 144 year history. Their commitment and leadership helped solidly secure Baer Cattle Company’s place amongst the oldest continuous cattle operations still existing within the State of Texas.

In 1960, Bert enrolled at the Bates School of Law, University of Houston, where he earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. He returned to Bay City where he practiced law for over 50 years specializing in general civil litigation, real estate and oil and gas law. Bert was an active member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, and the Matagorda County Bar Association. Bert enjoyed mentoring young attorneys developing their skills and practice in Matagorda County.

Bert served two separate terms as Matagorda County Judge, the first being 1973 – 1978 and the second being 1997 through 1998. This was a time of dynamic growth for Matagorda County and Bert was both thrilled and honored for being allowed to represent the interests of the citizens of Matagorda County.

Bert also served as Board Member and, ultimately, two terms as Chairman of the Lower Colorado River Authority headquartered in Austin, Texas. As such, he was integrally involved in directing the LCRA mission of enhancing the lives of fellow Texans through water stewardship, energy development and community service. Bert was also actively involved in numerous community organizations and service clubs over the years including but not limited to the Matagorda County Chapter of The Literacy Volunteers of America, the Gulf Coast Medical Foundation in Wharton and the Arabia Temple Shriners located in Houston.

In his personal time, for years Bert enjoyed and was quite adept at flying his different personal aircraft. He also loved being actively involved as a cattle producer, not only on the Baer but on family lands in Wharton County as well. Bert was well known for being an exceptional steward of not only the animals but also of the land as he practiced focused conservation, environmental protection and enhancement management techniques long before such activities became popular. Some of the greatest joys Bert spoke so fondly of were those wonderful experiences growing up with his grandchildren, Leigh Anne, Taylor and Savannah, as their “boot camp” visits were always packed with plenty of horses, cows and other exciting out-of-doors country experiences.

The family would like to give not only special recognition of but also our heartfelt gratitude to Laura Hatfield, Bert’s ever faithful secretary, Sherry Brown, his loyal caregiver / sparring partner, and to Ruby Huerta and Shirlene Garcia of Soft Touch Angels. These individuals demonstrated exceptional character, patience and devotion in assisting Pop through a very difficult period of his life.

Bert was preceded in death by Dorothy, his wife of 63 years, his infant son, Daniel Baer Huebner, his brothers George Lee Huebner and wife Patricia, Marcus Taylor Huebner and wife Wynelle, and David Newsome Huebner. He is survived by his children Allison Huebner Tally, Glenn Baer Huebner and Sara Lee Huebner, son-in-law Campbell M. Tally, his grand children, Taylor Maclin Tally of Las Vegas, Leigh Anne Tally of Atlanta and Savannah Glyn Tally of Virginia Beach, Virginia, his brother William G. (Billy) Huebner and wife Jutta of Houston, his sister-in-law Ruth Brant Huebner of Victoria, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Bay City at 2:00 PM on Friday, November 10, 2017 with Rev. Pauline Harvey Storey and Rev. Don Storey officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarvale Cemetery. Pallbearers are Glenn B. Huebner, J.D. Gatson, Sue Vaughan, Bobby Sanchez, Taylor Tally, Roger Huebner, Bobby Wilkinson and Greg Westmoreland. Honorary pallbearers are Billy Huebner, Bill Wiginton, Herb Henry, Hon. Neil Caldwell, John H. Boswell, Danny Schindler, Hon. Craig Estlinbaum, Bobby Legg, Haskell Simon and Clive Runnels.

In lieu of flowers and in recognition to Bert’s commitment to the betterment of life for all fellow citizens, the family requests consideration of memorial donations to E4E2 Adult Learning Center in Bay City, The Boys & Girls Club of Bay City or The Wharton County Historical Museum. Memorial donations to any different charitable organization of your choice are also encouraged.
