He was the son of Willis Powell Culp, Jr. and Mary Reed (Hays) Culp. He was a pursuit pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, was captured by the Japanese during the fall of Corregidor and spent the remainder of the war in prisoner of war camps
including Osaka, Japan.
