John Monroe Matthews Jr., 84, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, in Blanco. He was born Oct. 19, 1921, in Okmulgee, Okla., and graduated from Taft High School in Taft. He attended Texas A&M University and was a member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band. He served in the United States Air Force and after his service, he joined his father in his oil field support business in Pettus. On June 28, 1952, he married Martha Elizabeth “Betty” Gayle in Beeville. He was a longtime businessman in Beeville, first as part owner of Roberts & McKenzie Hardware and later as owner of B&J Hardware until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Nellie Matthews, his brother, Cecil Matthews, his wife, Betty G. Matthews, and eldest son, John M. Matthews III. Survivors include two sons, Glenn G. (Nancy) Matthews of San Antonio and William C. (April) Matthews of Elizabeth City, N.C.; grandsons Glenn and Andrew Matthews; granddaughters Meagen and Catherine Matthews; his sister, Thelma Smith of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Beeville, with the Rev. Doug Hinchcliff officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be W.G. Gayle, John Gayle, John Smith, Terry Potter, Darren Page and Jack Johnson. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were handled through Crofts Funeral Home in Blanco.
