Written by Nolan C. Holt in his own hand. Only small spelling corrections and punctuation were added for ease of reading.
“I was born December 18, 1921 ¾ mile west of Holt School. I attended Holt School through 4th grade. Then I went to Spearman through high school. I went to Texas A&M where I was a Cadet 1st Sargent. I served in World War 2 in Pacific Theater.
Georgia Thompson and I married September 23, 1942. We had two children Linda & Larry. They are engaged in farming; so are their children. Georgia died of ovarian cancer in 1983.
I married Helen Richardson Etter in 2000 and we are enjoying growing old together.
All this time I have been in agriculture. When I was very young, I walked behind a harrow pulled by a team of horses. It was necessary to harrow the field several times to control the weeds in the growing of feed for the livestock. When I got a little older, I rode a saddle horse behind the harrow. That was real progress. When I was about ten years old, I was promoted to a tractor. They made a back for the seat out of a thirty gallon barrel and riveted it to the tractor seat. I would climb up on the tractor fender and step down in the seat. That way I could not fall off. Machinery has changed through the years from horses to tractors that pulled a fourteen foot one way, to a tractor that pulls a 63 foot sweep and a combine that cuts a 35 foot swath. Now we have GPS that guides the tractor except for turning. I could not have continued to farm if I did not have Daniel Enriquez and Zach Chavez. They have been loyal employees for the last 30 years.
I am proud to be a part of the Holt Community, and the preservation of the School & Cemetery. I have had a full and wonderful life.” Nolan was baptized at the Kirk Lake during a local revival. He was a lifelong member of God’s family. He was currently attending United Methodist Church of Spearman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Marie Thompson Holt; parents, Benjamin Calvin and Birda May Kirk Holt; brothers, O.C. Holt, Joseph Newton Holt, Benjamin Fredrick Holt, and sisters, Maudie Marie Holt Marshall, and Myrle May Holt; and great granddaughter, Georgia Grace Pearson.
