Victor James Kahlich
(September 13, 1927 - September 22, 2017)

Victor James Kahlich, 90, of Palacios, Texas, passed away September 22, 2017, after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Victor was born September 13, 1927, in Dewitt County, Texas, to William Fred Kahlich and Hettie Theresa Till. He graduated from Cuero High School and entered Texas A&M University (Class of ‘48). His enrollment was interrupted by his enlistment in the U.S. Navy where he served primarily on Guam. After returning home, he married Leala Mae Schroeder on January 27, 1951, and completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Education.

Together, Vic and Leala moved to Palacios where he began a 35-year career in education. He first taught agriculture at Palacios High School and later served as a school principal at East Side Elementary and Palacios Junior High.

Vic and Leala proudly raised two sons, Douglas Ray and William Arnold. He coached little league and helped with FFA projects.

After retiring from education, Vic had a second career working for the Matagorda County Drainage District for 26 years. He enjoyed driving through the backroads of the county, working with landowners to improve the flow of water on their property.

Vic was quick-witted, hard-working, and energetic. He was an avid golfer and 42-player. He and Leala enjoyed Country-western and square dancing. He served on the boards of the Salvation Army and the Palacios Library. Vic was a member of the Palacios Volunteer Fire Department, Palacios Lion’s Club, and the American Legion. He attended St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lula Amsler, and brother Raymond Kahlich.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Leala; his sons, Douglas (Lou Anne) of Midland, TX, and William (Susan) of Magnolia, TX; his eight grand-children, Beth Anne (Tyler) Topper of Amarillo, TX, Kristin (Will Masket) of San Francisco, CA, David (Allison) of Parker, CO, James of Houston, TX, Victor Ryan of Spring Branch, TX, Sarah of Boerne, TX, Evan of Huntsville, TX, and Erin (Michael) Garcia of Houston, TX; his three great-grandchildren Emily and Elizabeth Topper of Amarillo, TX, and Victor Hayes Kahlich of Parker, CO; and his sister, Willie Marie Kahlich of Cuero, TX.

Visitation with eulogy will be held at Palacios Funeral Home on Friday, September 29, from 5:00-7:00pm followed by a Rosary prayer service at 7:00pm. Funeral mass will be at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Palacios on Saturday, September 30, at 10:00am. Graveside service and burial will be at St. John Cemetery in Lindenau, TX, on Saturday at 4:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Palacios Community Medical Center or Palacios Volunteer Fire Department.
