George Rudolph McArthur

George R. McArthur, 92, passed away on September 19, 2017. George was born in St. Louis, Missouri on November 8, 1924. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Bumgarner McArthur also of College Station, and his parents, Daniel E. and Betty Rudolph McArthur of Speed, Missouri.
George worked for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service (now Texas A&M AgriLife Extension) as a Specialist in 4-H and Youth Development. His primary duties consisted of managing the state-level contests and awards programs. This included the annual Texas 4-H Roundup held on the campus of Texas A&M University each June. He also managed the state-level awards given for outstanding achievement in several areas of learning in which 4-H Members participate each year. George was a detail oriented person who could manage multiple tasks, and his creativity brought a spark of freshness each year. Over the years, George was part of a team of Specialists who brought the Texas 4-H program to new audiences as the demographics of the State changed. A few years following retirement from his regular job, George became a volunteer in the Texas 4-H Foundation office where he took a leadership role in managing the growing college scholarship program. It was George who developed more precise measurement techniques for awarding scholarships, and it was his ideas that drove a move from pure Agriculture based awards to include Life Sciences, graduate scholarships, and technical training.
George was known for his bike riding and fixing bikes in the 70s. He also had a love of woodworking, making many projects for friends, family, work, and church. He had a kind, servant’s heart.
He spent the last 4 months at Grace Place in Bryan, Texas and 6 years before that at Carriage Inn also in Bryan, Texas. He enjoyed all the kindness that surrounded him while he was a resident at both places. He especially enjoyed Cindy Putz, who took great care of him for 3 years.
He is survived by his sons, Dan (JoAnn) of Arlington, Texas, Dwight (Laurie) of Collierville, Tennessee, and his daughter, Beth McArthur Howard (Ronnie) of Falfurrias, Texas; 5 grandchildren; Chris McArthur, Katy Keith, James McArthur, Alyssa McArthur, and Megan McArthur.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Bryan, Texas on September 30, 2017 at 10:00 am.
Memorial gifts can be sent to American Parkinson Disease Association, First Presbyterian Church, Bryan, Texas or Hospice Brazos Valley.
