Fitzgerald, Jay B.

Jay B. Fitzgerald (BS/MS Texas Tech University; PhD Texas A&M University) was born on January 28, 1942, in Mineral Wells TX. Growing up in Palo Pinto TX he had a passion for hunting and fishing which stayed with him throughout his life. He married Judy in 1968 and immediately shipped out to Viet Nam where he did 3 tours of duty as a Navy quartermaster, service that led to 100% disability. Jay was a passionate teacher, serving at Cal Poly Pomona and the University of Nebraska Lincoln from which he retired Emeritus. He specialized in greenhouse design and cut flower production. He was the state-wide floriculturist and was a guest on the Backyard Farmer a number of times. Jay was the initiator and wrote the test for the Nebraska Certified Nurseryman program. He received top teaching and student advising awards from both universities, as well as numerous awards and recognitions from parents and agricultural organizations. He began the FFA greenhouse program in Nebraska; at Cal Poly he was involved with their Rose Parade float. He was especially proud of the FFA Distinguished Service Award for the State of Nebraska and the Distinguished Service to Students award from UNL. Jay died August 17.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jones Bradford Fitzgerald and Ina Jo Mack Fitzgerald of Palo Pinto TX.
