Edward Hill, 86 of Amarillo died Tuesday, August 8, 2017.
Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Llano Cemetery with Rev. Kevin Deckard officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., Amarillo, Texas 79110.
Mr. Hill was born March 28, 1931, in Dallas to Clodius Harris Hill, Sr. and Blanche Haynes HIll. When he was a very small child, his family moved to the Hill Farm west of Garland, where he was raised.
He graduated from Garland High School and then attended Texas A&M University from which he graduated in 1953, having earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural education. While attending Texas A&M, he was a member of the Texas Aggie Band and the Ross Volunteers, and was an International Farm Youth Exchange Student to Greece.
Upon graduating from Texas A&M, he served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army during the Korean War and thereafter continued his military service in the Army Reserve until he retired in 1983 with the rank of Colonel in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. For his service to the Pentagon, Mr. Hill was awarded the Legion of Merit.
Following his active duty military service, he met and later married the love of his life, Ann Lynn Sadler, on June 3, 1956, in Tyler. In 1957, he graduated from the University of Texas School of Law. For many years, he was a Partner/Shareholder and head of the Real Estate and Oil & Gas Section of the law firm of Underwood, Wilson, Berry, Stein & Johnson. He served as Chairman of the State Bar Oil, Gas and Mineral Law Section and, in 1989, he was appointed as the initial Chair of the newly-created Texas Title Examination Standards Joint Editorial Board and served as Board Chair until 2015. He served on the Legal Committee of the Texas Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association. In 2006, he received the Distinguished Real Estate Lawyer Lifetime Achievement Award from the Texas Bar and in 2010, he received the Chief Justice Charles L. Reynolds Lifetime Achievement Award from the Amarillo Bar Association. Mr. Hill was a past President of the Amarillo Bar Association and a Sustaining Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. He was Board Certified in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law by the Texas Bar Board of Legal Specialization and served on the Oil, Gas and Mineral Law Advisory and Exam Commissions of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization tasked with supervising the Oil, Gas and Mineral Law specialty and drafting the annual exam questions.
In 2010, he was chosen by the Amarillo Area Bar Association to receive the Chief Justice Charles L. Reynolds Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of the achievements and successes which Mr. Hill earned during his years in the practice of law in Amarillo from 1963, when he joined the Underwood Law Firm, until his retirement from the practice of law more than thirty years later as a Senior stockholder of that firm.
He was very involved as a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church and was elected as a delegate to numerous world, national and regional Conferences of the United Methodist Church, including representing the United Methodist Church in Manila, Philippines, at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Methodist Church in the Philippines. He also served on the world mission board of the United Methodist Church as a director of the Texas Methodist Foundation, and as a Trustee of McMurray University.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2010 and by his parents and his brother.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann Elizabeth Jenkins and husband Dr. Greg W. Jenkins of Amarillo, and Amy Katherine Butler and husband Thomas C. Butler of Houston; five grandchildren, Jessica Ann Conn and husband Brandon Conn of Keller, Edward Dale “Ted” Jenkins of Amarillo, Gregory Cade Jenkins of Amarillo, and William Thomas Haynes Butler and Albert Clayton Butler, both of Houston; many nieces and nephews; and three great grandchildren, Madison Ann, Harrison Daniel and Brooklyn Faye Conn of Keller.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Polk Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1401 S. Polk St., Amarillo, TX 79101; or a favorite charity.
The family will receive friends from 5-6:00 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2017 at Schooler Funeral Home.
