Arthur Clevenger(1928 - 2017)
(June 19, 1928 - July 31, 2017)
Frank was born in Marshall, TX to Virgil and Ruth Henry Clevenger. Very soon the family moved to Denison, TX where he grew up with family and friends, attending public schools and graduating from Denison High School in 1945. Frank was the first member of his family to attend college, and he proudly graduated from Texas A&M University in 1951. With his BS degree in Electrical Engineering, he went to work for the General Electric Company, first in Schenectady, NY and then in far West Texas.
He was drafted by the US Army and served in Ballistic Research, testing atomic and hydrogen bombs in the South Pacific at Eniwetok Atoll. During time at his base, Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, he met his wife Sarabeth who was attending Goucher College near Baltimore.
Sarabeth and Frank married in 1959 and lived in Abilene, TX until 2012. Frank was a consultant to the electrical power generating industry for 60 years, with Tippett and Gee Consulting Engineers until 1994 and then with Lauren Engineers and Constructors until 2012. A highlight of his career with T&G was working in Alaska after the 1967 earthquake.
Frank was a runner and a cyclist. He discovered sailing in midlife and fell in love with small boat racing. Eventually he combined his love of woodworking and sailing, building two wooden sailboats. In 1994, he and Sarabeth bought a larger sailboat, living aboard in summer and taking trips up the Northwest Pacific Coast.
Frank and his wife moved to Salt Lake City in 2012 to be near family and enjoy the mountains.
He is survived by his wife and three children: Matthew Clevenger (Martha Glenn) of Salt Lake City, UT, Celise Clevenger of Santa Cruz, CA, and Joshua Clevenger (Lisa Calley) of McGregor, TX. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Felix Clevenger of Austin, TX, Augustine and Ava Clevenger of McGregor, TX. Extended family includes a dear cousin, Donna Brown (CL Brown) of Denison, TX; and brother-in-law, Anthony Brown (Eloise Olbricht) and their children: Teysha Vinson (Turner Vinson), Monya Brown, all of Abilene, TX, and Jordan Brown of Salt Lake City, UT.
The family requests any donations be given to Frank's favorite charity, Habitat for Humanity.
Services for Frank Clevenger are planned at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Abilene on the Thanksgiving weekend. Time and date to be confirmed later.
