Bob was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to William and Helen Heckrotte, and spent his childhood in New Jersey. He earned his B.A. degree from Montclair State College in 1951, and his M.S. degree from Texas A&M in 1964. He served in the Air Force as a fighter pilot for 23 years, including a tour in Southeast Asia, and retired with the rank of Major in 1974. He worked as a Registered Nurse at Long Beach Community Hospital for ten years, embracing challenges in the Emergency Room, Operating Room, and Critical Care units. Bob and Judy lived aboard a sailboat in the Sea of Cortez for a while, enjoying adventures with friends and family. Bob was a volunteer tax preparer with AARP in Seal Beach and Huntington Beach, and brought daughter Laura into the group to prepare taxes. Bob played trombone with the OCC Wind Ensemble, and brought Judy, with her French horn, into the orchestra as well. Bob put his lifelong love of reading and learning to use as a volunteer at the Huntington Beach Main Street Library. Most weekday afternoons, Bob walked the Huntington Beach pier, and then observed the antics on Main Street with a group of men who called themselves "The Old Geezers".
Bob will be greatly missed. He will be honored with a celebration of life memorial.
