Marjorie Ann Heyman
1955 - 2017

Marjorie Ann Heyman passed away with her family by her side in the early morning of Monday, July 10, 2017, from complications of stage 4 renal cell carcinoma. She was born in Pleasantville, New York, on Dec. 20, 1955, as the first child of Ed and Ginny White. She is survived by her husband, Glenn Heyman, sons Orion and Shae Heyman and her siblings Betsy Hartz and Edward White.

Marjie was brilliant with an active mind and big aspirations. Over the years she earned one B.S., one M.S., two M.A. and one Ph.D. degree. She had an insatiable sense of adventure and wanted to be the first female astronaut, but her eyesight precluded this event. She decided instead on going to Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she earned a bachelor's degree in geology in 1977. She then went to Texas A&M University where she earned her master's degree in geology and geophysics in 1980. During this time she met Glenn in August 1977 and subsequently married on July 17, 1982. They were the love of each other’s lives.

She worked for Chevron Exploration Company, first in Denver, Colorado, and then in San Ramon, California, where she worked in northwest Africa and became the manager of new ventures oil and gas exploration for areas that included India to Japan and China to Malaysia. During this time she was so happy to become a mother to her two sons Orion and Shae.

The family made a change and moved to Athens, Ohio, where she met lifelong friends and worked at Ohio University in the Department of Equity and Civil Rights Compliance, working for equal opportunity for all employees as well as to enhance the experiences of students with disabilities. During this time she earned an M.A. in social sciences while working full time, raising her two children and supporting her husband in medical school. She also became an outstanding “hockey mom,” a skill she would continue in her years in Missoula.

The family then moved to Michigan where Marjie earned an M.A. degree and a Ph.D. in anthropology and archaeology at Michigan State University while maintaining her role as mom and wife to a medical resident. The family finally moved to Missoula in 2005. Her activities here have included serving on the board of the Missoula Amateur Hockey Association, as the team DJ for the 2009/2010 varsity hockey state champions, on the City of Missoula Historic Preservation Commission board, on the Fit to Fight cancer exercise support group board, and owner and manager of a family business. She became the mom of a third son, Tung Hoang, a foreign exchange student from Vietnam who spent his senior year at Loyola Sacred Heart High School. As his mom, over the years she became a grandmother to two adorable little girls. She also worked as a volunteer at the Missoula Public Library and worked as an election judge for Missoula County. She was always exceedingly passionate about each activity in which she participated.

Marjie was an exceptional mother and loving wife who always tried to find the best solution to problems for everyone involved. Marjie loved to travel, being proud to have been in every state in the U.S. as well as having traveled to many countries in Europe, northwest Africa, Central and South America, India, China and southeast Asia. She will always be loved by family and friends. A memorial celebration of her incredible life will be held at her home at a later date.
