Robert Thompson "Bob" Morgan
1933 - 2017

Robert Thompson "Bob" Morgan passed away on July 19, 2017. He was born in McAllen, Texas on June 24, 1933 to Helen and Eglon Morgan. His father worked as a farmer, barber and minister, while his mother was an accomplished organist and bookkeeper. He grew up in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas and developed an interest in agriculture and farming alongside his mom and dad. He also became a proficient trombone player, receiving All State honors in Band and earning a few dollars playing in several swing bands in the area.

He attended Texas A&M, majoring in horticulture and serving in the Corps of Cadets and as a member of the Fighting Texas Aggie Band. He graduated in 1954 and promptly married a big-city girl from Dallas, Johnnie Gochenour. They moved to New Orleans where he served for two years in the US Army.

Bob started his farm machinery career with Massey-Ferguson at the company's store in downtown San Antonio. In 1966, the family moved to Memphis as Bob became a dealer rep for the J. I. Case Farm Equipment Company. He and Johnnie raised the kids in Memphis and moved to Oklahoma City for a few years in the 90's, eventually moving back to Memphis and retiring from Allis Chalmers in 1998. He became a devoted caregiver for Johnnie as she suffered and ultimately succumbed to Alzheimer's in 2002.

Not one for idle time, Bob turned his "hobby" of tax work into a full-time profession with A-Bobs Tax Service. He especially enjoyed helping his more senior clients take full advantage of the US Tax Code.

Somewhat of a renaissance man - Bob spoke Spanish when so inclined, enjoyed a good game of Texas 42 dominoes, was the chief mechanic for all the kid's cars and several of the neighbor's lawnmowers and was a devoted member of Second Baptist Church for nearly 50 years.

He leaves behind his children, Bob Morgan, Jr. (Kathy), Ben Morgan (Monica), Nancy Morgan Key (Robert), Ema Morgan Taylor, and grandchildren Jennifer Morgan Helton (Jimmy), Jonathon Morgan, Jordan Key, Sydney Key and Colton Morgan.

Visitation will be from 1 pm – 3 pm at Second Baptist Church, 4680 Walnut Grove Road on Sunday, July 23, followed by a memorial service. Burial will be at Forest Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 2440 Whitten Road.

The family suggests memorials be sent to Second Baptist Church in his honor or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
