MAJOR SAMUEL B. MARTIN, USAF (Ret.) slipped the surly bonds of earth on June 25, 2013 at the age of 92.

Sam Martin was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on August 10, 1920, the son of Ralph and Elva Martin. He graduated from Garwood High School in 1938 and then graduated from Texas A&I in 1942. Sam enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the Second World War, attained his pilot's wings, and taught aviation candidates at Sheppard Air Field in Wichita Falls, Texas. It was at Wichita Falls where Sam met and then married the love of his life, Jennie.

Sam was recalled to the U.S. Air Force after WWII and flew rescue, flying supply missions out of Clark Air Force base in the Philippines during the Korean conflict. While serving during the Vietnam War, Sam flew C-47 gunships, also known to ground troops as "Puff the Magic Dragon.

During the Cold War years while stationed in San Bernardino California, Sam was reassigned to fly patrol missions over Europe from bases in England. Later he was assigned to ROTC instruction duties at Ohio State University where he earned his Master's Degree. Subsequent duty stations included Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in Newfoundland, Castle AFB in Merced, California, and Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, California, where Sam retired from the Air Force. Sam's decorations include the Bronze Star, Korean Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal, among many others.

After his retirement from the Air Force, Sam was asked to teach at Bellview Elementary School in Atwater, California, a postion he held until his final retirement twelve years later. He and Jennie spent their later years traveling the world over, and enjoying their children and grandchildren.

Sam was preceded in death by his sisters, Ellen Battell, Alice Seargeant, and Edith Triby. He also was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jennie L. Martin in 2011, after 68 happily married years.

Sam is survived by his son, Sam Martin, of Stockholm, Sweden, and his daughter Sunny Martin ("Nan") Hewitt of League City, Texas. Also surviving are his grandchildren Heather Hewitt of Leander, Texas, Heidi Hewitt of League City, Texas, Lee Martin of Stockholm, Sweden, as well as great-grandchildren Alexis, Bryce, Madison, Kaylee and Samantha ("Sammy").

The family sincerely thanks Autumn Leaves Memory Care Facility in Pearland, and especially Hospice LVN LaDonna for their kind and devoted attention to Sam and their comfort and guidance to Sam's family.

Sam will be interred next to his Jennie at the Winton Cemetery in California. A Graveside ceremony will be held on Monday, July 1, 2013 at 11am.
