A funeral service and reception will be held at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan on Thursday, July 20 at 11 a.m. A private family burial will be held later in the afternoon at Bryan City Cemetery.
Carroll Gene Hix was born in Valley Mills, Texas, the tenth child of Francis Gorham and Lula Lee Hix. He attended schools in the small community of Elm Mott, Texas. After graduation from LaVega High School, he served his country for 4 years in the U.S. Navy
during World War II.
While attending Baylor University, Gene married Martha Tucker of West, Texas on February 18, 1948. After graduation, they moved to the Texas coast where Gene was the editor of the Port Isabel Press and later worked for Amoco in Texas City. They brought their
3 young children to Bryan in 1963 where he opened Gene Hix Printing. After earning his doctorate in 1974, he became an editor and writer for the Texas A&M Engineering Department and later, the Texas A&M Agricultural Department.
Gene was a member of First Baptist Church, Bryan for 54 years, serving in the college department as a director and teacher. He was a member of the Business Men's Bible Class. In his eighties and until his ninety second birthday, it was his joy and honor to
be able to sing a short, acapella hymn as a benediction for the class.
Gene was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed traveling and taking nature classes with Martha all over the United States. He will be remembered for his quick wit, his way with words, and his love of sharing stories and games with his friends
and family.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Martha Hix; son Carroll Hix of Little Rock, Arkansas, daughter and son-in law Susan and Jim Miller of Houston, and Thomas Hix of College Station; his grandchildren Ryan Hix, Travis and Erica Barrett Miller of
Cypress, Texas, and Caleb and Sallie Miller Dean of Plano, Texas; and great-grandchildren Emma, Sam, and Lilah Miller, and Ezra and Remy Dean.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the men of the First Baptist Church Business Men's Bible Class.
