A Hero, A Leader and Courageous man Edward Charles Schillo Jr. 75 of Merritt Island passed away from Cancer on June 27, 2017.
This man, consisting of many components, was devoted to his family and friends, his military career, and his love of many avocations.
Ed was a native of Harrisburg PA, graduated from Central Dauphin High School where he established many records for others to attain. In his early years, his challenges came from sports in which he excelled. He was inducted into the Central Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1987, and The Pennsylvania Century Sports Team in 1999. He was a 1964 Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and earned a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology from Texas A & M in 1973.
This charismatic man was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Edward Schillo Sr of Harrisburg. Ed left behind, his wife and fellow "Traveling Gypsy" of almost 39 years Kathi (Lipton), son Edward C. Schillo III and wife Gabrielle (Costigan) of Palm Coast Florida, grand-children Edward Charles Schillo IV, Thomas Sharkey Schillo and wife Morgan (Gart) of Savannah, Georgia and Helene Schillo of Virginia Beach. Daughters, Heather Marshall and husband Rick, grand-children Victoria and Ian all of Ashland City Tennessee; Holly Hutchinson, grand-children Savanna and Lucas, of Mary Esther Florida; Elizabeth Schillo of Newark Delaware; Nattsu Ullom and husband Ryan, grandchild Satsuki of Villa Rica Georgia; Tracy Morgan of Mechanicsburg PA, and his precious four-legged fur baby Maggie. His Cousins Reverend Eric Schillo and wife Catherine; Glen Schillo and wife Angie; Nancy Matalonis and husband Paul; sister in law Peggy Belnap Hummel and her husband Kim, Nieces Amy Clarke and husband Rich and Jenna Belnap Miller and husband Ben, and nephew, Christopher Belnap and wife Sara.
Upon graduating from West Point he faced the challenge of additional specialized schooling including Jump School at Fort Benning before he departed for Vietnam. Ed served two tours of duty, earning two Purple Hearts, The Air Medal, Two Bronze Stars with V for Valor, Army Commendation Medal with V for Valor, Three Vietnamese Gallantry Cross Medals, and the Combat Infantry Badge, He served 14 years as a Regular Army Officer and 16 years as a Reserve Army Officer. After Army service, he chose to continue serving in the capacity of a DOD Civilian Employee; Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg, PA, Naval Supply Depot, Yokosuka Japan and the Marine Corps Logistic Base in Albany, Georgia. After retirement, he served on the Governor's Council for Education … a most diverse and eclectic career, full of successful endeavors, adventures and blessed by many good friends along the way.
Ed's avocations were sometimes as challenging as his military career but not as dangerous. He and Kathi loved to travel and climbed the great wall of China in an ice storm, chased kangaroos across the outback of Australia, soared over the badlands in a hot air balloon, rode elephants in the slippery jungles of Thailand and dove for Black Pears in Bora Bora. When not traveling, he enjoyed working on projects with Kathi at home, donating time for Habitat for Humanity, and held board positions for AUSA which allowed him to continue working and helping our soldiers on the Space Coast.
Services for Mr. Schillo:
Friday 21 July from 6 to 8 pm will be "An Evening With Family And Friends" at Wylie Baxley Funeral Home, 1360 N Courtenay Pkwy, Merritt Island, FL. That evening at 7:30 pm. There will be a family tribute, a military tribute and a prayer service conducted by his cousin The Reverend Eric Schillo.
Saturday 22 July at 11 am, the funeral mass will be Officiated by Chaplain Mike Delorenzo at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 1940 N Courtenay Pkwy, Merritt Island, FL.
Immediately after the mass, the funeral procession will be lead to the cemetery for burial with military honors. The Graveside service will be Officiated by Reverend Schillo.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests supporting two areas of importance to Ed, The military and dogs, by considering a contribution to Paws for Patriots a small non-profit that raise and train dogs for the veterans.
