Leon Boettcher
Born: September 6, 1931
Died: July 4, 2017
Location: San Antonio, Texas

Ernest Leon Boettcher went to be with the Lord on July 4th, 2017. He was born on September 6th, 1931 in Dallas, Texas to Ernest and Velma Boettcher. He attended Hillcrest High School in Dallas and continued his education at Texas A&M, where he joined the Corps of Cadets and played the piccolo in the Aggie Marching Band. Upon graduation in 1953, he was called to serve in the U.S Army and was stationed in Germany from 1954-1956. He then went to work for Union Carbide in Dallas, and was eventually asked to move to New York to accept a promotion as branch manager. Instead, he chose to keep his family in Texas and purchased Goetz Oil Company in Sherman, Texas. Later, he sold the company and moved to San Antonio to continue working in the oil and auto parts industry.

After completing his military service, he met his bride, Betty Reeder, when she visited his Sunday School class, at First Baptist Church of Dallas. They were married on July 16, 1960 and lovingly shared the next 56 years together raising their 3 wonderful daughters, and enjoying their 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons.

Leon was an enthusiastic hunter and loved taking care of his yard and garden. He also enjoyed all sports and was an avid tennis player until his health started to decline just a few short years ago. He also earned numerous medals participating in the Senior Olympics, throwing the discus and javelin. The love of music was instilled in him at an early age. His mother was a well-known piano teacher in the Dallas area, and his Uncle Edmund was a leading tenor in Dallas and also conducted the Dallas Male Choir for 30 years. Leon entertained his family by playing classical style tunes by ear on the piano, and more current tunes on the harmonica.

He spent many early mornings meeting his retired friends at Whataburger for coffee, and he occasionally enjoyed reconnecting with his fellow Aggies at the monthly Aggie luncheons. Leon was a long time member of Castle Hills First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and sang in the church choir for many years.

To his 11 grandchildren, he was known as Poppy, and he loved spending time with all of them. His 2 great grandsons also brought him much joy during the last few years. He was a hardworking provider for his family and a loving husband and father. Most importantly, he helped to lay a deep and firm foundation of Christian faith in all 3 of his daughters, which will be evident in many generations to come.

Leon was predeceased by his father, mother and sister, Ann (Robert) Favor, and is survived by his wife, Betty Boettcher; daughters, Lisa (Doug) Hilss, Amy (David) Hodge and Gail (Bill) Armstrong; his 11 grandchildren, Jenna (Matt), Jared, Dylan, Abby, Ella, Billy, Heather (Tyler), Amber, Ashley, Autumn, Ryan; and 2 great grandsons, Jackson and Owen.

A memorial service will be held at Castle Hills Church, Grace Chapel on Friday, July 14 at 11:30am. Flowers can be sent to Castle Hills Church, 2220 NW Military Hwy., San Antonio, TX 78213.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Patient Access Network Foundation at https://panfoundation.org/index.php/en/donate or by mail to Patient Access Network Foundation, 1331 F Street NW, Suite 975, Washington, DC, 20004.

He will be laid to rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
