OSCAR GARCIA
Lt. Col. Oscar M. Garcia
U.S. Army (Ret.)
On February 6, 2017 passed away peacefully at his home in Arlington, VA.
Oscar was born on May 18, 1921 in San Diego, TX to Josefa Moreno and Juan Garcia.
He attended Texas A&M University where he earned his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. He was an officer and a combat engineer in the North African Campaign during WWII. He was later transferred to Salzburg, Austria where he met his wife, Ernestine E. Bruckmayer of 60 years. Oscar was then transferred to Korea where he used his Engineering skills. After the war, he attended the University of Illinois where he earned is M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering.
He attended Military schools and civilian universities and served as Communications Engineer Staff Officer. He was later transferred to Headquarters, U.S. Southern Command (Panama) served as the Senior Communications Officer in the Command's Contingency Operations Task Force. Oscar served in Vietnam, where he staffed and activated the Combined Telecommunications Engineering Agency that planned and directed the installation of a nationwide Command and Control Communications System for the Republic of Vietnam. After serving as a career Military Officer, he retired on July 1975 to join Electronic Data Systems in Alexandria, VA as a Research Analyst until he retired in 1985. Oscar was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Arlington, VA, where he became a toast master. Oscar was proceeded in death by his wife Ernestine, his daughter, Linda A. Garcia and his two brothers, Juan L. Garcia, Hector Rubin Garcia, plus his two sisters, Alma Garcia Tijerina and Gloria Garcia Kennedy.
Oscar is survived by his son, Anthony Garcia and his sister-in-law Ann Garcia and many nephews and nieces.
Service will be at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel on July 10 at 8:45 a.m. with interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
