Conrad Callicoatte Jr.(1936 - 2017)
CALLICOATTE JR., Conrad Stanley 8/26/36 6/25/17 "He came on a summer's day Bringin' gifts from far away But he made it clear he couldn't stay No harbor was his home. . . His life, his love, and his lady was the sea." Elliot Lurie Conrad was born in Houston where he was introduced in his early years to boats and boating by his father, Conrad Sr. It remained his lifelong passion. On Sunday, June 25, 2017 he reached a rarely-achieved goal. He died doing what he loved, in a sailing accident on White Rock Lake in Dallas. By profession he was a civil engineer; a graduate of Texas A&M University. A quiet, even taciturn, man, he showed his passion in his actions. By avocation he was a lover of sailing, kayaking, tennis, hiking, snow skiing, fishing, hunting, his daughter Kim, playing catch and frisbee with his border collie Buster, celestial navigation, Colorado mountains, the Texas coast (especially Palacios and the Clive Runnels Family Mad Island Nature Conservancy Preserve), watching NFL football, home-cooked food, d-i-y repair projects, sunsets in the BVI, listening to Rachmaninov and Andres Segovia and finding the cheapest gas. He smiled seldom, laughed rarely, but felt deeply and on occasion displayed a subtle humor. On wandering off a hiking trail at the Colorado National Monument he remarked, "This is how a REAL man navigates the wilderness." He will be deeply and forever missed by his daughter Kim, his longtime companion, Jo Lynne Merrill, members of the White Rock Boat Club, the Dallas Racquet Club and his many friends. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 8th at 7 PM at the White Rock Boat Club. In lieu of flowers please consider a tax-deductible donation to the White Rock Boat Club and/or The Nature Conservancy in Texas.
