Curtis, David (Dave) Stith
June 16, 1930 - June 27, 2017

Curtis, David (Dave) Stith
David Stith Curtis (Dave) died peacefully at home on June 27, 2017. He was loved and respected by family, friends, and others who knew him for his kind, gentle manner and his quiet, unassuming humor. Dave was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 16, 1930, to John P. Curtis and Clara Walther Curtis. After a rich childhood on the beaches of Rio and occasional trips to the Texas Hill country where part of his family originated, Dave graduated from the American High School in Rio in 1948 and subsequently attended Texas A&M University. He graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering, a rank of 2nd Lt. in the USAF, and a lifelong passion for Aggie football. In the USAF, Dave flew many planes- his most memorable being the F-86 fighter- and he lived all over the U.S., in addition to Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1957 as a Captain.

Dave enrolled in law school at SMU where he graduated in 1960, later specializing in Estate Planning and Probate Law. Throughout his career, his clients referred to him as a true gentleman whose kindness was always appreciated. Dave was a member of the Dallas North Rotary where he was a tireless program chairman for 10 years. He was a member of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church for 47 years and an usher there for much of that time. He and his wife were volunteers with the SMU International Friendship Program for 25 years where many of the sponsored students became, and still are, cherished family members.

Dave is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rosemary Bobo Curtis; his son, Col. Sam Curtis, wife, Anne Curtis, and sons David, John, and Otto William; his daughter, Dr. Somer Curtis. He is also survived by his brother John Curtis, wife, Helen Curtis, and children John Curtis, Beth Womble, Margaret Curtis and David Curtis. Additionally, Dave leaves behind many other valued family and friends, including Sheryl Huitt, his secretary and dear family friend, and his favorite “muster” buddies, Malcolm, Bill, and Al, who were such a constant presence throughout Dave’s life and most especially when he was sick.

The memorial service for Dave will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Dallas Rotary, 5606 Anita St., Dallas, TX 75206, or to Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church: Online Giving.

Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.
