Johnny Carl Cammack(1942 - 2017)
Johnny Carl Cammack Nara Visa resident and rancher passed away on Thursday June 22, 2017, in Lubbock Texas.
Born November 10, 1942, in Tucumcari, New Mexico to Addison "BOB" and Kathy Cammack, John was raised on the family's ranch 17 miles NE of Nara Visa. He was always a very hard worker, regardless if it was building fence, branding, working cattle or studying to further himself so he could reach his dream of owning his own ranch one day. He attended school at Nara Visa, Amistad and graduated from Logan High in 1961.
He attended New Mexico State University obtaining a Bachelors Degree, enjoyed being on the rodeo team, riding bareback horse and competed in several of the RCA rodeos. Next he went to Texas A & M where he received his Masters degree and then spent the next several years as a Lab Assistant in Reproduction Physiology while earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1971. John always had a love of animals, especially horses. He chose to being working at the Golden Animal Hospital, a well known facility for treating performance type horses. Eventually moving to Arapaho Animal Clinic owned by Dr Farrow,a close friend. Eventually he was offered a position at the State of Colorado Racing Commission as a Track Vet and quickly began a program of "testing" different drugs and their effects on horse and dogs. As the project progressed as an accepted standard in the racing world, John visited a number of the surrounding states documenting his findings.
After his father passed in 1986, John made a choice to follow his dream of ranching. He bought the family ranch so he could move back to Nara Visa/Amistad/Logan areas to be near the people and land that he loved so much. For several years he also worked with his brother Jay at Camco Herefords, doing whatever was needed from fencing to helping with the Embryo Transfer Program. John was a very unassuming person who studied the Bible in detail and was a true believer. He strongly believed in self discipline, that planning plus hard work would eventually equal success, while treating everyone with honesty and respect was essential and most importantly, success is not success if you have to deceive, lie steal or cheat.
He always enjoyed seeing and visiting with his many friends from his day of "Rodeoing" and the "Race Track" Days. He seldom missed watching rodeos on TV. John was involved with many local activities such as the Nara Visa Cemetery Association, the Nara Visa Community Center (OLD SCHOOL)and the Volunteer Fire Department.
John was preceded in death by the following family members, his parents, and older brother, Jerry and niece, Beth Cammack.
Surviving relatives are as follows, younger brother, Jay(Linda) Cammack of Nara Visa; niece, Maretta (Tom) Miller Logan NM; their children, Mariah (Justin) Ward and her son Bradley of Colorado Springs; John's ranching buddy, Kohl Clemmy, Nara Visa; nephew, Jay Cammack Jr, Levelland,Texas; nephew, Brian (Dorlaska) Cammack and their son, Trentan, Edgewood NM; niece, Pam (Jim) Shepherd and their daughters, Kathryn and Emily, Lorton Virginia, nephew Newton Cammack Lovington NM, and his daughter Zoe, Lubbock Texas; niece, Gwen (Brook)Adams and their daughters, Ashlyn and Andie of Gransbry, Texas.
Graveside services celebrating his life were Tuesday morning June 27, 2017, in the Nara Visa Cemetery beginning at 11:00 AM Nara Visa Time (10:00 AM Mountain Time) with Chester Kimber officiating. Pall bearers were Jimmy Valentine, Jimmy Burns,Van Robertson, Dusting Robertson, Kyle Perez, Michael Perez and Gary Girard.
To honor John Cammack, the family asks for donations to the Nara Visa Community Center in Nara Visa New Mexico 88430.
