HARRY HUGH PENDERY JR
(October 10, 1941 - June 8, 2017)

Harry Hugh Pendery, Jr., M.D., passed away peacefully in Paradise, CA on June 8, 2017, with his immediate family by his side. He was 75 years old. Harry was born in Ft. Worth, Texas on October 10th, 1941.

Harry, or "Doc" as his patients affectionately called him, was a medical doctor with a private family practice in Paradise, CA from 1971 to 1998. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee, Memphis in 1966, three years after graduating from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX.

Harry was a true American patriot and proudly served his country as a Flight Surgeon attaining the rank of Major in the United States Army from 1967 to 1970. He served overseas, stationed in Germany for 3 years, before returning to the United States and settling in Northern California with his wife and three children.

In addition to his successful medical practice, Harry was very active politically, writing hundreds of letters to the editor concerning a wide range of topics, both locally and nationally. He ran for Congress on the Libertarian ticket in 1988, 1992 and 1994. He was both fascinated and frustrated by politics, but always stayed true to his Libertarian allegiance.

Harry retired from his medical practice in 1998 and traveled across the United States with his wife, Norma Jean. He chronicled this multi-year journey in a book he wrote and published called "The Pursuit of Happiness In Retirement - Outrunning The Reaper". He was an avid reader and a student of life. Among his many passions and accomplishments, he obtained his private pilot’s license and flew his plane with his family on numerous adventures. He loved to fish, hunt, camp and spend time outdoors. He was extremely creative and talented. He participated in designing and building his home and enjoyed creating unique wood monuments and garden statues.

Harry was a strong supporter of Veterans causes and the VA Hospital which he credits with extending his life after being diagnosed with a rare heart condition in 1998. He was an avid supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project and made buttons by hand to sell in an effort to raise funds for this worthy charity.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Norma Jean Pendery, his three children Christney Callas, Scott Pendery, and James Dale Pendery, his seven grandchildren, Shelby Callas, Andrew Pendery, Kylee Pendery, Cole Pendery, Austin Hawes-Pendery, Ashley Hawes-Pendery, and Jesslyn Pendery, also his brother David Pendery and his sister Marilyn Jones.

The family will be hosting a private "Celebration of Life" honoring Harry in the weeks ahead. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate a donation, in memory of Harry, to his favorite charity, Wounded Warrior Project. (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) Paradise Chapel of the Pines is entrusted to all arrangements.
